I started some training with Aka a few weeks ago and used the clicker and treat method. The training was simple, turn around, bow etc., but after the second time he turned around, and I gave him a treat, he spat it out. I thought it was the type of treat (a piece of Brazil nut), and carried on with the clicker no problem.
Last week, his toilet training was slipping because I was away for a day and he was in his cage but his toilet doesn't fit in the away cage so he had to go in the cage. I tried giving him pieces of melon because he enjoyed melon when I gave it to him as part of his fruit salad. Same thing, after the second or third time, he spat the melon out and went for my finger to tell me how he felt about the situation. I thought "no problem, I'll try something completely different next time".
Today, after about a week of trying to give him different treats for toilet training, not biting when he used to etc., I thought I found a treat that he loves. Its called Bix, I'm not sure if you get it outside of South Africa, but they are small animal shaped pellets made from fruit and veg. He loved the first two I gave him, ate them after I praised him for using his toilet after he told me he needed to go (via a squeak). Third time he went to his toilet, he spat the Bix out and got annoyed when I tried to feed it to him again (I didn't realize he spat it out, I thought he just dropped it). No treats for Aka then, I've tried but he doesn't like any of them.
Seeds are also a no-go, he doesn't even look at them unless they are sprouted.

Manzi was like this sometimes, where he was very temperamental with treats. I found the best training happened when I didn't leave free feed in his cage. So I'd feed him some pellets for breakfast, then remove the left overs. Then in the afternoon do a training session with high value treats. Then after training let him eat as much as he wanted. I weighed him regularly too, just to make sure he was maintaining his weight.
But still, Manzi would change what kind of treats he wanted. Pine nuts were a favorite, but I would chop them into like 5 pieces each, or he would fill up way too quickly.

Hi Adele, Thanks for that, I'll see if that works Aka is going to be upset with me if I take his food out of his cage haha. Will try it and let you know.

Funny enough, (I forgot to add this yesterday), Aka prefers his pellets above everything else.
He'll eat his pellets before his chop, any dried fruit (the only way he eats his fruit), any other food I give with the exception of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Maybe I should try training him with his pellets or cob.

Yes, they can be very fussy with food. Mitzi goes through crazes with nuts and she will refuse to eat a type of nut once the craze has passed. First it was walnuts, then almonds, then cashews, and now pecans. If I give her anything other than a pecan she will just drop it. I don't put them in the food bowls, I hand feed them.
They both love pine nuts though and never refuse them. They have a few as a treat, again fed by hand, each evening. Monty in particular gets very excited, he has trouble walking and climbing but he moves so fast when he sees me with the container of pine nuts.

Beaker gets a mix of pine nuts, sunflower seeds and cashews for dinner.
He really likes a piece of STARBURST.

That's really cute about Monty with the pine nuts.
I struggle to get nuts at a decent price here, they are soooo expensive. I found a place that sells pin nuts rather cheaply so I'll get some when I get back from Germany. Alternatively, I could buy nuts in Germany and bring them back.....
Do you know if I can get red palm fruit anywhere? I could only find links like red palm oil here, it will be expensive but I think he'll like those since it's what CAG naturally eat in the wild.
Aka wasn't really interested in nuts the last time I showed him but his beak wasn't fully developed (rather hard enough as an adult) he wasn't interested. I'll see what his reactions his when I give him nuts in the shell. That might be the way to get him to eat nuts.
That sounds like a good supper Beakertrout, with the exception of the sunflower seeds I wouldn't mind that for my dinner either haha. Whats Starburst? Aka normally gets veggies and brown rice or whole wheat pasta for supper, or gem squash or corn on the cob etc. It depends on what we have and if I've remembered to defrost the corn or squash.

Chyloe loves cashews as a treat. She gets almonds as part of her supper. For breakfast, she has an assortment of beans, rice, fruit, various nuts, corn, carrots and broccoli. She will sit in front of her breakfast bowl holder and wait. She loves breakfast.

I finally found a treat for Aka!
It's cabbage.
Red or white cabbage is the only 'treat' he will accept, and it's the only food I can use as a lure (to get back into his cage).
Strange parrot. He still attacks my hand if he sees me holding a treat and flings any other type of treat I give him, and I have been experimenting with a few things lately.

Hi Jane,
Aka loves banana as well but it has to be in his bowl/s. I can't give him a piece or let him take a bite out of the banana itself because he growls at it/me and then tries to throw the piece on the floor. I managed last week where he didn't so I thought we were making progress but then he bit me and threw the piece of banana I had in my hand on the floor.

Mine are the opposite, they are much more likely to eat something if I give it to them rather than putting it in their bowls.

Same here. Chy will take food from my hand rather than in her bowl. I gave her banana this morning but she threw it.
