I've been off here for a while cause I'm dealing with some serious issues with Manzi. 10 days ago, I was carrying Manzi and Maui to their outdoor aviary, and something startled Manzi. If he startles, it usually isn't a problem cause I hold his feet or have him in the carrier. This time, I tripped when he startled and he flew off.
I wasn't too concerned at first, cause the last time he got out, he hung around and flew back to me when he got thirsty and hungry. This time, I couldn't find him anywhere in the area. I searched for 8 hrs per day the first two days (it was the weekend). Then I had to go back to work, but I was still searching at least 3 hrs per day. After a couple days, I figured he might have gone to someone, desperate for food/water, so I started putting up flyers. I called vets, shelters, pet stores and posted all over online. Finally, after a whole week, someone a mile away tipped me off that their neighbor found a Grey and gave it to someone else. I went to their house and they were able to get the Grey back and it was Manzi.
Manzi was so excited to see me and immediately called out to me. But when I got closer my heart dropped. He was in bad shape. They couldn't remember how long they had him (they said 1-2 days). They said their dogs found him on the side of their house. It was late in the day, and no avian vets were staffed at the animal ERs. At home, he did eat a bit, but his head was held way off to the side and he could hardly stand up. He couldn't drink. I tried having him drink with a syringe, but he still wasn't drinking.
The following morning, he was nearly unresponsive. I had been checking on him all night (I put him in a box with a towel and slept next to him in the living room), and continued to call ER places at all hours hoping for someone who could treat him. At 8am, I was able to get him to a place a few towns over that had an avian vet. She put him on oxygen, fluids and antibiotics right away. By that time though, he wasn't opening his eyes.
Later that day, they said he perked up some, but still doesn't have good balance and his head is off to the side. They don't think anything is broken, but that he has brain swelling from head trauma (the couple who found him said he was by their window, so maybe he crashed into their window?). They are running more tests today, so hopefully they can get a better idea of how to treat him. I've been having nearly a constant nervous breakdown since he got out. I was happy to see him, but my heart is breaking.
I'm kinda at a loss of what to do right now. I'm getting updates twice per day from the ER hospital. They won't let anyone into the building at all due to Covid. They did say that he screams every time they handle him and I'm sure he's terrified. I want to bring him home so I can comfort him, but I don't want to lose him. He's been with me through so much in my life. For many years, it was just him and me.
