I've had Manzi for 15 years, and Maui for 10 years. They have mostly lived together, but they've never gotten along. In general, as long as there is enough space, they didn't kill each other, but they did beak spar at least a few times per day. They often chatted and talked to each other though.
Anyway, just a month or so ago, Manzi and Maui decided that they love each other. Then, a week ago, after always being by Maui's side, Manzi decided he hates me! Like aggressively hates me. A few days ago, he gave me a really nasty bite (which has happened less than I can count on one hand, and the other bites were almost always because he didn't realize there was my skin under a clothing item). I was feeding him treats at the time. I had known that he was getting somewhat aggressive, so I was hoping to bribe him with treats to show that I wasn't a threat to him and Maui. After taking a few treats, instead of grabbing the next treat, he got my finger. It hurt like heck and throbbed for two days straight.
So, I immediately separated Manzi and Maui, thinking that maybe if he doesn't have access to her, that he'll not need to protect her from me. I'm really not sure that's the best though. It has been a couple days and Manzi is increasing his aggressive attitude towards me. He lunges at me from inside the cage if I come near. I have still been talking with him frequently and giving him treats (through the bars now). He'll take the treat, which means something (some people he hates, he'll refuse to take a treat from them).
Anyway, I'm worried that now his breeding behavior towards Maui has taken away my pet. Maybe when we are further from the breeding season and his hormones calm down, he'll revert to being nice again.
Despite Manzi's behavior, Maui is just as sweet as ever towards me. She still loves her scratches and cuddles. I wonder if me scratching her is making him more angry too. I'm not quite sure.
