After weeks and weeks of practicing different sounds, Doobie finally says, "hello". Not on cue yet, but, I've noticed that when I leave the room, she'll say it. I always repeat it back. I'm so excited. She's only 5 months old.
Sebastian on the other hand, seems to be much more vocal than Doobie was. Sebastian's only 8 weeks old and seems to be practicing different noises already. He "sings" to me every morning after I feed him. It's the cutest thing. ;D

Congo is saying hello now. He does it when he wants. He was repeating after Sam when he was saying hello, kinda cool that Congo is learning from Sam.

Monroe's favorite thing to do is "wolf whistle" for attention. We've been working really hard with him on "Hello". He's been saying it but not that often. last night, he started his whistling and we intentionally ignored his call. A few minutes later he said hello in the clearest voice you could imagine. After that, every time he wanted our attention, he said hello instead of the usual whistle.

Jimmy is 8 months now and he will say Hello, uh oh, pretty bird and do quite a few whistles. The words are kida quiet, and he will only say them durring one of his ranting bursts. He won't just say hello, but when he goes off with a series of wistles mumbles and other noises you here the words pretty clear here and there in the middle of his out burst.

Bozley has amazed me with his vocabulary but only when he thinks no one is listening. Most mornings he wakes up before I do (I work nights) and he just sits in his cage going through the whole routine to himself. He says "Hey pretty bird", "Bye-bye", "Whatcha doin", "What!", "Hey Boz", "Hey Baby", "Here kitty kitty" and my favorite "NO!" (like a 2 yr. old!). Yesterday I also heard him say "Thank you. You're very welcome". I don't know exactly where he heard that but I couldn't help but laugh. At least he has good manners! I gotta say, it's a great way to wake up every morning! God Bless! Casper just started talking about a week ago. Prior to that, my husband called her a 'random noise machine' as she made all sorts of sounds but no words (I spend the most time with her and thought I could detect the intonation for 'you're a good birdy' in amongst the noise.) Suddenly, out of nowhere, last week she just came out with a crystal clear 'Casper'. The funny thing about it is, my son is the one who chose the name 'Casper' and I wasn't 100% sold on it yet. Until I got to really understand her personality, I only used the name sparingly. Most of the time I said 'What a good birdy!' or 'What a pretty birdy!' In the week since she started talking, she now says, very clearly, 'Casper good birdy', 'whatchadoin', and 'hello'. Another interesting thing is the tone of voice she uses to speak. Her 'random noise machine' voice is pretty loud and gruff, but when she switches to speaking mode, it becomes softer, higher pitched, and quite clear. She NEVER did that kind of noise prior to speaking. How odd!
I am off work on medical leave for back surgery and have been having a lot of fun being with her all day every day...it will be hard to go back to work...

Peanut is about 20 1/2 wks old and I brought her home the beginning of June. A couple of days ago she finally said "who's the boss? " This is something I've been repeating on a pretty regular basis. Also, I think she is trying to say hello-- it seems funny that she already says Whatchadoin-pretty bird--pretty girl--I love you--who's the boss--but is just trying to say hello ---
Yesterday I was running a little hand vacuum around the room. I've used this vacuum almost daily around the cages and she never seemed to mind it but I'm not sure if she was growling or trying to imitate the motor, but I couldn't help but laugh !! Every time I held up the vacuum she made the same noise, even after it was turned off.
Although you can easily understand her, she still talks in that parroty voice, (very infrequently she'll spit something out in a human voice)--will her speech take on more human sounds as she gets older or will she always have the parrot voice??
I'd like to ask how many of you have a parrot that will talk back to you ?? I've heard that lots of parrots won't talk unless they're in a room by themselves. When I talk to Peanut when she's on her playtop, she'll talk back to me.

nancyd Some Greys (or any talking bird) sound a lot like their owners but others have their own voice. I once heard an amazon parrot who had won a talking bird contest. This bird had an owner with a very distinctive voice and an even more distinctive laugh and the bird sounded exactly like her and was making everyone else laugh. Mitzi talks when there is someone in the room but she does seem to talk more when there isn't. I can also have a conversation with her when she can hear me but can't see me, such as: "what's going on?", "I am tidying up" etc. Sometimes she will do a wolf whistle and I tell her what a good wolf whistle it was and she will do another one.

Matty is gonna be 9mnths on Aug 1st. She is starting to talk up a storm. She started with "Whatre ya doin?" but now says "hello Matty" ,"pretty bird", "cmon Bailey" (dogs name), she wolf whistles, and does the dogs cough. Shes expanding her vocabulary quickly but not the quality of her enunciation. Will it get better?
disclaimer: My dag has a collapsed trachea that is a birth defect which makes her cough.

My boss's grey, Izzy, sounds just like the wife, whom Izzy hates and bites to the extreme. However, Izzy has learned a new word recently, it's ME. He says, "hi" really high pitched like I do when I come in to work in the morning. I'm trying to teach him, "Izzy is a busy bird". I say it several times a day around him, maybe one of these days.

i think i'm going to take zeke to 'speech class' the local bird shop that i go to is always full of people with their parrots and i'm thinking if i take zeke up there and expose him to other birds that are talking that he'll pick up on it quicker then if we lame humans talk to him. my friend house-sat for us over the weekend and she brought her love bird with her. ever since then zeke has been making love bird noises in addition to his usual vocals. hence the reason i think he may learn better from other birds.
