I have been seriously thinking about taking down the cage I bought but dread doing it as it was quite cumbersome putting it together as I didn't have anyone to help me. The thought of doing it again is just turning me off. But it is really starting to bug me when I go into that part of the room to feed my tiel and see an empty cage. it's downright depressing. I have already put all the dishes, perches and toys away in a box and moved them to the attic as they weren't doing anything but catching a lot dust. Would covering the cage with a plastic painters drop cloth keep it reasonably clean or should I just give in and take it apart

Sure, draping polypro over it and taping the bottom to secure it will keep it well enough. Did I miss something?

Nancy, I Know you feel like you will never find a TAG but I am sure there is one out there for you. Breeding season is just starting and by the time tax season is over you should have a good chance of getting one. Mid march is the time that breeders will be accepting deposits on babies which will be weened by May or June depending on the hatch day. I would cover the cage as Preston said and concentrate on getting your work done. I will try doing a search of the Ohio area for breeders. Please don't loose hope in finding a TAG
John
P.S. I know of someone who has a deposit on a TAG from a place in Fla. I will try to get the name and # for you. They do ship so that may be of help to you.

Thanks for the links. AvianBiotech came back with absolutely no results. I printed out the BirdsNWays link but I think I have already contacted most of these people. Please understand that the greater percentage of these people are just hobby breeders who seem to have a minimum of experience, won't bother to answer the most simplistic of questions and will sell an unweaned parrot as fast as they can get the money in their hands. One breeder even asked me for a nonrefundable deposit on a bird that is just 3 weeks old!! (What if something should happen to the chick?? Or what if I don't like that particular bird Well I'd be put on a list for the next male born). Furthermore she refuses to even let me meet her in person unless she has this deposit !!! In the meantime I have contacted Bobbi Brinker, (author of For The Love of Greys), who has sent me to the "African Queen" Jean Pattison in Florida members.tripod.com/The_African_Queen/. Both Jean and Bobbi have pretty much told me that "I am scaring the breeders by asking questions as suggested in this article www.companionparrot.com/articles/questions.html And that I should be glad I'm not doing business with them. Anyhow I am on Jeans list but she has also told me to keep my eyes opened for other places as there is no guarantee that she will have babies. There are two major aviaries that have come highly recommended one in Pa but has a waiting list of 7 people and his breeder has just laid 2 eggs. That means I will be waiting for a couple of years. The other breeder in Texas never really told me how many he had on his list but implied that I would be waiting until at least the fall. The original breeder I thought I was buying from has told me the same thing. ( i sure wish she would've told me her birds never bred back in the winter instead of waiting for me to ask her late in January. That sure wasted a couple of months when I could've been looking. I have had some contact with someone in Lansing Michigan who breeds birds more in the lines of Maggie Wrights thinking. (Not pulling them from the nest as quickly as most breeders). So the search still is on---but each month that goes by with noone contacting me telling me they have babies is very depressing. And again looking at that empty cage is certainly not helping any. Thanks Preston I will seal up the cage. I think I have a painters drop cloth that was never opened from when I bought my house. (I hope its big enough). Maybe I can use twisties to close up the bottom.

Nancy, you can also ask at your local bird store if there is a bird fair coming to your area soon. A bird fair may be a good place to find a breeder. You are doing the right thing by asking alot of questions and I think you are on the right track. Keep us posted.

Whew!! I thought we lost a bird! Duct tape is like “the force” it has a dark side and a light side, and holds the universe together. I would not do business with anyone that I have to give a deposit to just to visit with them. My Sister breads Labs, and they are very expensive. She teaches owners and the pets, and my brother-in-law trains them to retrieve for hunting. Simply awesome to say 1 word to a dog and it happens. www.rangecreek.com/ To get back on subject, you can call them, visit all you like, and choose your pup after they are born. The deposit is to assure that you get one, not to rip you off. Click around the site and see what an honest breeder acts like. I know, they have dogs world wide in competitions, and several champions. I know it isn’t a bird, but they are breeders with an excellent reputation and there isn’t much difference when the ethics are a concern. BTW the trees to the right, lining the creek are registered Texas bird sanctuaries. I wonder who did that. LOL! Kind of gives new meaning to cutting the lawn, all 140 acres is as pictured, cut!

Thanks for the back up Preston. That lady that wanted the deposit --well --when I read that email I justa bout fell off my chair !!! As anxious as I am to get a TAG, there is no way that I would buy from someone under those terms.
Patti--Tha lady that runs the Ohio Bird Fair is Marti and she was the one who recommended the breeder that I thought I was going to be getting a chick from this April-May. I've only missed one bird fair since last year. Most of the breeders won't bring their birds to the fairs 'cause they're worried about them catching something, and sadly they don't put out any kind of signs or advertising to let you know that they have birds let alone what kind. Most vendors there have toys, play gyms and an assortment of different seeds. Actually I was shocked to see someone selling scented candles !! I thought this was a no-no with parrots. The breeders there have tiels, parakeets, some quakers, lovebirds, finches--mostly the little birds. I do stop and talk to as many of them as I can but so far no luck. (Some of these people are the ones that I had previously contacted and found they were either trying to sell unweaned birds or wouldn't answer my questions when I tried to contact them the first time around).

Geez, I can't believe I got so lucky. Nikko just kind of fell into my lap last October. I hadn't expected to get a TAG until this summer.
The breeder I was considering doesn't have any TAGs yet, which is odd, because last year, all the TAGs were hatched during the beginning of February. Maybe it's a bad breeding season everywhere this year.
Are you still going to take the last parrot class you need from PEAC? Maybe they'll have a nice grey available at that time.
How's your cockatiel doing? Has she settled down with the screaming?

my breeder said she had a phenomenal breeding season in 2005. when i got Gandy i had 4 chicks to choose from. they were all from different parents and each hatched a week after the other,, but she has 10 or 12 pair of breeders. she said even the pair that she hadn't gotten a chic out of in 10 yrs had 2 chicks. i guess the air in wisconsin was good last year.
