I was reading an article in a magazine about Jane Goodall. She is 90 now and has spent over 60 years studying chimpanzees. When she first started she said it took four months to gain the trust of the chimp community. She told of a chimp who seemed more tolerant of her than the others. She followed him but she lost him going through some vegetation. When she got through he was sitting and looking back, waiting for her. She gave him a palm nut which chimps love. He turned away so she put her hand closer. He took it but dropped the palm nut again. However he then gently squeezed her hand as if to reassure her. She said they understood each other - he didn't want the palm nut but he understood that her motive was a good one.

That reminds me of when I was young and went to a zoo in Quebec. There was a chimpanzee there that was not behind bars. It came up to me and took my hand. I had forgotten about that incident. It was a long time ago.
