In 2020 five African Greys at a wildlife park had to be removed from display for three months for swearing at visitors. Billy, Tyson, Eric, Jade and Elsie are now star attractions at the park. There is a disclaimer notice at the enclosure warning visitors. However, three more - another Eric, Captain and Sheila have started swearing but they are being introduced to the rest of the flock to try and dilute the swearing by picking up other sounds from the rest of the flock and also drown out the sounds of any swearing. Alternatively they could end up with 100 swearing parrots instead. At the moment there are about 30 birds who imitate the beeping sound of reversing lorries.

Some people think it is funny to teach birds to swear. Fortunately, we do not swear so Chy has never picked up any bad language. Once my husband banged his shin on the coffee table. For ages after that, Chy would say, "ow, ow, ow".

The CEO of the park said that they could tell whether the parrots had learnt from a man or a woman because of their voice. He said the parrots had been donated and when they were brought in it was obvious who had taught them even though the owners were denying it. He was on BBC Breakfast and said the parrots couldn't appear on the programme because the language was so bad. He said it was funny to hear Sheila talking in a man's voice.
