Hi everyone,
I am new here. I have an African grey aged almost 12. He is a beautiful bird, very talkative, very friendly and very naughty! Recently, though I have been very busy and I haven't had much time to trim his nails, and so one time when he climbed on my shoulder, he made it very bruised and bloody. So I decided to cut his nails, which I always do by the way, I always take extra care in terms of not cutting too short, however (I think you know where I am going with this) unfortunately on one of his toes, I cut too short, causing his to bleed. To my shock, I quickly ran his foot under the tap then I used disinfectant and a plaster to avoid any infections.
During all of this, he was completely fine, no changes in behavior, no signs of him being in pain, and everything was fine. This was two weeks ago, yesterday, I went to his cage and I could see that there was blood stains on the cage and on his stick from his foot. I wasn't sure what had happened or how, but when I checked his foot, I saw that he no longer has a back toe on his left foot on the right side. I feel so bad for him. I was so shocked, I didn't know what happened. There was nothing near his cage that was sharp and there is no way he could have come out of the cage some how, so I have no idea how it was cut off. I also looked in his cage for any remainings of his toe and I couldn't find anything apart from blood. In terms of his activity he seems absolutely normal, still talking, still eating and drinking, I don't see any changes to his behavior. But, I do notice that whenever he stands resting, he has his foot up and he does fall asleep more often than usual which is what concerns me. The photo I am uploading was yesterday, as you can see there is something black, which I am guessing is blood? Today however, the black stuff is gone and it looks healed up. So my question to you guys is what do I do! I don't know if the first story is relevant to the situation and I don't even know if its the same toe. I would have taken him to the vet but I don't know of any in my area with birds and also I wouldn't be able to fund it anyway, so I try to avoid it. But any comments would help, thank you very much.
