I had got Monty a toy consisting of various metal tubes, beads and wooden shapes. He enjoyed playing with it but then I saw him sitting on his perch and he had managed to remove one of the wooden shapes - a chunky ring with a hole in the middle and he had got it wedged on his beak. Luckily I managed to pull it off but it was fairly firmly stuck, he wouldn't have been able to get it off himself.

Poor Monty. You hear about things like that happening with wild animals and humans having to rescue them.

When Beaker was very young he managed to wrap himself up in a rope toy that I literally had to cut him out of.
That was when I realized there are some very dangerous toys out there.

Yes, I sometimes think toys are designed by people who have no real experience of African Greys. There is a toy that Mitzi loves which is described as being suitable for African Greys. It is a sort of wooden tube with holes in and has pine cones, straw and bits of paper inside which are all good but then there are these very flimsy little plastic chains attached which I always cut off before giving it to her.

Wow, that's kinda scary with Monty! Good thing you were able to get it off of him. Manzi would often fight with his toys, but never got stuck in one.
I did have a hanging bead thing over a doorway that Manzi used to love playing with. Once, I was on the phone and Manzi started screaming like a berserker. The person on the phone was very concerned with whatever was happening at my house. Manzi had got his feet tangled in the bead thing and was hanging upside down. I ran over and untangled his feet, and then told the lady on the phone that it was just my parrot. After that, Manzi still played with the bead thing, but he never got his feet tangled in it again.

Monty seems to be able to get stuck in anything. I had got one of those skewer things that you can thread their fruit and veg onto but I use it to put small toys on. Last night he got his beak stuck in the little metal ring that attaches the skewer part to the top and once again his beak was firmly wedged in it. It took some effort for me to get it out. I took that item away.

It seems to be a male thing. Max once got a toe struck in a hole in his cage. He flapped like crazy as I rescued him.

Monty got his beak caught in the chain of a toy he has had for ages. He seems determined to get himself stuck in anything he can. I have now put vet wrap round the chain.

If that was Chy, she would chew off the vet wrap.

Mitzi would have chewed the vet wrap off as well. Monty is much less destructive with toys but he doesn't seem to have the same strength in his beak as she does.

I put vet wrap all around a wooden perch to stop Chy from destroying the perch. She completely removed the vet wrap.

Jane, has Monty ever bit someone? I remember Mitzi got a neighbor a few years ago. I never thought about them having different beak strength.
Maui never figured out how to open walnuts herself, but Manzi used to open them. Sometimes he'd try and never figure it out, so then I'd try and often I'd struggle and get out pliers. But I didn't really think it was beak strength and instead always figured it was technique. But maybe not.

No not deliberately, unlike Mitzi. His beak is a lot bigger than Mitzi's but he is very gentle with it.
You can get little metal openers for walnuts, they are flat and triangular shaped and you put the pointed end in the top of the walnut where the two halves of the shell meet and then twist. They do work very well.
