Hi all,
I will attach two photos of Aka's feet. Are his nails too long? He has been biting them a lot more lately, he just puts his claw/nails in his bottom beak and pulls for a few seconds.
I don't know if this is normal or something to be concerned about? He seems fine with everything else, except still a bit itchy from the moult.
Thanks.
The photo's were taken on two different perches because as soon as he saw I was trying to take a photo of him, he climbed out of his cage to bite the phone out of my hand (I was fast enough). He hates it when I take photos of him.

Preening the nails in that way is normal behaviour. They don't look too long from what I can see. Mine have the nail trimming perches and I find they have always worked very well. You have to make sure you get the right size though.

Hi Jane,
Thanks, I will stop stressing.
I will look for nail trimming perches online or in another town since the pet stores in my town (we have four) don't sell any, nor do they stock them.
I'll check for the right sizes online or if they have a table at the back of the pack. Thanks. Trimming the funny foot will be difficult with the nail trimming perches though because he doesn't actually perch with that foot, just rests it on its side like in the photo. He uses it lime normal when he climbs around, just not when he perches.

You might have to use nail clippers on that foot, the sort that look like scissors with a semi circular notch in each blade. You have to be careful to only remove the points of the nail. He might not be keen on having that done.

Hi Jane,
Yes, I have seen those. When the time comes I will take him to the vet and ask him to show me and then I'll do it myself after that. There is a pet shop up the road that does wing clipping and nail cutting for a small fee but the condition of their parrot cages is so poor I refuse to go back there.
I'll see when the time comes, if I get nail trimming perches but on a chain that I hang from the roof of his cage as well as put them normally, that foot might get trimmed when he climbs around his cage.

The nail trimming perches can be quite heavy. I have got the Polly Pastel ones and the correct size for African Greys has a diameter of one and a half inches, so they are usually bigger than other perches. They also do twisted ones which provide more of a variation. I have some other nail trimming perches as well, you can get some that are more like branches but with a coating on.

Hi Jane,
Hmmm ok thanks. I'll check them out, I don't want them to swing and hit him in the face or whatever. I'll ask the vet what the best thing would be to do, if the best thing is to visit the vet every few weeks/months then I'll do that. If he shows me how to trim them and I get those clippers you wrote about I'd feel more comfortable.

The nail trimming perches don't work for Chyloe. I have to use a Dremel on them. I have her lying on her back on my lap while I "sand" the claws down. She doesn't like it and clenches her toes to make it difficult for me.

Hi Haz,
That's interesting, I hadn't thought about that. I am getting a few DIY tools for a project soon and I'll see about his nails. He still isn't too comfortable with people touching him (as in my other post) so the dremmel might have to wait until he's ok with me holding him and putting him in different positions. In the meantime I might just have to take him to my vet, when they need trimming.
