Pest controllers are using facial recognition technology to tackle Britain's rat population. Individual rats can be identified by comparing tiny differences in the shape of their heads. They are then classified and notes are taken of their daily habits to count rats at different locations and identify ringleaders. This will help to work out the best places to site traps or poison in warehouses, shops, offices and food producers. The technology will identify which rats are returning, where they are feeding and sleeping, who is causing damage, where they are getting in and whether it is the same rat doing the most damage.
