I have had to separate Monty and Mitzi for the last couple of weeks because Monty's mobility issues got worse and Mitzi was bullying him off perches. It seems to have caused Monty to get very broody. He has been displaying to a toy and also to me. It is the full wings out, huffing and puffing and regurgitating scenario. He has been doing this on a daily basis and it is most unusual for him. I think he must feel the smaller cage is a suitable nest box and he needs to be getting on with things!

At least you don't have to worry that Monty will lay an egg.

He is very sweet. He seems more content now he doesn't have to worry about Mitzi bullying him. Mitzi has been in a huff because I have taken him away from her. They can still see each other.

Do you have plans to put them back together? I remember last year or the one before that, you discussed having to separate them.
When I finally put Manzi and Maui together (after having Maui for about 3 years), it wasn't on peaceful terms, but it was on doable terms. After a few years of that, I started traveling for work, and then the girl watching them said they would fight. So then I got scared something would happen to one of them, so I separated them again. But this time I kept them separate until I built the large aviary in the back. They still slept separately inside though. A couple years after that, they started displaying to each other and I was able to take the divider out of their indoor cage.
Anyway, I don't understand all the dynamics or why they get a certain way. But most certainly for sure, it can change again!!
That's really interesting that Monty is displaying to you even more. Have they been able to interact with each other physically at all, since you've separated them? And now Mitzy's irritated she doesn't have her punching bag!

I don't intend to put them back together, I just don't trust Mitzi. I had put him back at one point and every time Mitzi went towards him I told her to leave him alone and she did but then I was distracted for just a bit and in that time she had bullied him off the perch and he fell so I took him out again. He has always had a very prominent breastbone although he weighed 468 grams yesterday. Mitzi had also pecked him above his eye before I separated them. Before I separated them I had put a perch low down in the cage and a food bowl by it but Monty would still make an effort to climb up to his favourite perch. Mitzi kept sitting on the low perch and unhooking the food bowl, probably to make a point.
They haven't had any physical interaction although Mitzi is very interested in watching what he is doing. Monty doesn't seem to miss her at all and prefers being with me. He is still whistling and squawking happily but she isn't talking as much.
