Hi all,
Most of you might know that I have had an issue with Aka and bathing. He hates the spray bottle and attacks the spray bottle (and me) when he sees it, and the bath I had for him a few months ago broke because the fountain doesn't work anymore which meant he wasn't interested.
We bought a new sleep/carry cage two weeks ago and I saw a large dog bowl -the one with the large gap in between the walls and the base of the bowl if you flip it upside down- and we got it on a whim. Once Aka stopped growling at it from the couch (where we put all his new things so he can check them out first), I started putting it into his cage. First, no water or anything, just the bowl. Then, I would add water and some spekboom (an animal-safe succulent in Africa) as incentive, then finally some small rocks for him to stand on and to weigh the spekboom down.
Well, I did that like normal today and he actually had a proper bath! I was so happy. I will attach the photos below. He can't submerge his whole body in the bath but that's OK, it's probably safer anyway. He doesn't seem to care, he got his tail feathers wet and the tips of his wings and wet his body like that. I'm so chuffed, he has been a bit cranky lately because he is still moulting and he's itchy. We have the humidifier and I take him into the bathroom when I shower but during the day the air is still very dry.

That's good. Aka is clearly enjoying it and knows what it is for. They like to do things their own way.

Hi Jane,
He loves it. I had to take it out after about two hours because the weather changed and I didn't want him to get wet and not be able to dry in time for bed, and when he noticed it was gone (he was eating when I took it out) he walked straight to where it used to be and gave an annoyed grunt and gave me the stare of death.

Chy prefers to bathe in her water dish so the water is all over the bottom of her cage.

Hi Haz,
Aka's water bowl is bit smaller than his food bowls because it's the bowl that attaches to the side of the cage with a screw (we bought it separately from the cage) so there isn't space for Aka to bathe in it. I have to clean the water from the cage floor (and carpet) after he has his bath as well, it's quite heavy once I put water in it so between me splashing water on the floor when I put it in the cage and Aka flapping his wings, it gets pretty wet. I want to get a washing machine cover to put under the cage on the side of the bath but they don't sell them separately here and I'm not in the mood to buy a new washing machine just for the cover haha.

Mine will try and have a bath in their water bowl and then I know to spray them. When they have a bath in the water bowl it gets everywhere but neither of them does it very often. Monty loves water, Mitzi less so. I have a heavy dog bowl with water in that I put on the floor of the cage and Monty loves to play with rubber ducks in it, sploshing them around - the ducks that is, not himself. Mitzi has never been interested.

Hi Jane,
Yes I do the same with the dog water bowl. I didn't think of ducks or anything, maybe I should get some.
