Hi everyone, Aka has a different relationship with my husband and I. I am the perch and my husband is the scratcher. Unless Aka is sore (after a fall) or extremely tired, he won't sit on my husband's shoulders, or step up unless it's to go to the toilet.Similarly, Aka doesn't let me scratch him as often or for as long as he allows my husband to. I can scratch him, but he only lets me scratch his head while my husband can scratch his neck, head, and face. He let me scratch his face once but something outside made a noise so he was spooked and now he associates the sound with my face scratches, so I can't anymore.
The picture below is a common sight with Aka and my husband, it can be inside or outside the cage, the pose is the same. Aka also moves towards my husband when he says "come closer" because he knows he is going to be scratched. If I try to scratch Aka like my husband does in the picture, I will lose my fingers haha.

Yes that is very typical African Grey behaviour. They have a different relationship with each family member and that includes who can touch them and where.

That is a nice photo.
Normally, I can touch and scratch Chy anywhere but the other day, I must have caught a pin feather which hurt her and she whipped around and chomped my finger bringing blood. It still hasn't healed.

Hi Jane,
Yip. He goes through stages though, sometimes I can touch his feet and his beak, but then the day after that it's like "no, only neck is allowed today", but for about ten seconds. It was actually really nice yesterday, I was touching his beak and he tilted his head to the side so I could scratch the other side. I don't know how often that will happen but I was really chuffed. With my husband, it's the "Scratch me. Hahaha got ya!" about 50% of the time, but when he does let my husband scratch him, my husband complains that his arm gets tired because Aka can sit there for 45 minutes to an hour and get scritches.
Hi Haz,
Thank you, and ouch. I hope it heals soon. Aka bites me when I scratch his head and go over the ear area so I have to be very careful. The first time, I didn't realise it was that close to his ear so he bit me. The thing about their beaks though, is that you can't free yourself unless you plan to fling them across the room as a reaction, or sever a large portion of your skin, so you have to sit there and wait until they decide to let go. He got me the other day on my face which was totally my fault. He was chilling on his cage door and I picked something up off the floor, but he thought I was going to try and take him off the door (which is his new favourite spot) because my hands were in his direction and he turned around and bit me. It's crazy how fast they are, I didn't even realise he bit me until I saw blood haha.
