I was watching a programme last night about sheep. When sheep run in a herd they are not just doing it randomly, they are actually ensuring that they always remain at less risk from predators, with each sheep trying to maintain a position within the herd rather than on the outer edge of the herd.
They put different coloured dyes on the sheep according to their age and then used a sheepdog to herd them from one field to another. The older more experienced sheep always remained in the centre of the herd while the younger ones did tend to just dash around and get to the front or the outer sides of the herd.

That is interesting Jane. I remember seeing wolves hunting musk ox in the artic. They tried keeping the young ones in the middle, but the wolves would just bite, then back off. Eventually, the young musk ox went down. It was sad though cause the mom left the herd and tried to fight off the wolves, but then they got her too.
