Aka has grown a little bit in the past month or two so he can reach area's on the outside of his cage he couldn't before. He enjoys climbing on the outside of the cage and around the back for exercise and to see what my reaction is, probably. He can't get back into his cage without my help (yet), but he enjoys crawling around.
This is his face every time he moves past his pellet bowl. He knows that the bowl swings out so he sometimes tries to unscrew the black lock so he can get to his food more quickly, but it's too slippery for his beak and claws (thank goodness) so he just waits there for me to pick him up and put him into his cage so he can eat the pellets he has been staring at for the past five minutes.

Aka is so sweet.
Mitzi can fly but she always expects me to take her back to the cage by staring at it.

Chyloe can't fly. She is unable to grow flight feathers on her left wing. At the moment, she has one deformed flight feather on that wing. She has no problem climbing up and down her to and from her cage.

Hi Jane, Thanks That is really cute, I can just imagine the stare. Does Monty fly? I know he has an issue with his feet but can/does he fly when he wants to? Hi Haz, Oh that sucks, do you know why? In the beginning, did she try to fly and was unbalanced so she topped, or did she know she wasn't able to fly from the beginning?

No, Monty can't fly, he can't grow primary flight feathers on either wing. He did have them when he was a baby but he starts to grow them and they always fall out malformed. There are a lot of things he can't do but he is very happy and docile, he enjoys playing with all sorts of toys (unlike Mitzi who mainly only plays with toys she can destroy) and he is 31 now.

Chy had flight feathers as a baby. After the first molt, she couldn't grow them on her left wing. They come in deformed or fall out right away. She still tries to fly on a rare occasion without any success.

Hi Jane,
I didn't realise that could happen so easily, about the feathers, especially over a long period of time. It's cool that he is docile and plays with anything, like his personality kinda shows with what he plays with.
Hi Haz,
Oh ok cool, I imagine she hurts herself a lot. Are her right flight feathers clipped? Are you allowed to clip your birds' wings in Canada for non-medical reasons? (In the EU, you can only clip them if there is a legitimate medical reason for it like a broken wing that is healing so the bird shouldn't fly or in cases of wing/spine deformities which makes it dangerous for the birds to fly etc.)

Yes, we are allowed to clip flight feathers. However, the vet said not to because she needs all the help she can get to prevent injury. She did launch herself off the top of her cage once and split the skin over her keel bone. The vet tried bandaging her but she bit the bandage off. After weeks of replacing the bandage, she needed an operation to stitch her up.
While she was bandaged, she wouldn't talk or eat. After the operation, when the vet brought her out to see me, she said, "Hi sweetie pie. Let's go and eat. Everyone laughed.
She has not injured herself since then and that was years ago.

Oh ok cool. Ouch, I'm so scared of that happening to Aka.
That's so cute! The motivation for her being more careful might be because she knows that if she is injured enough to put a bandage on, she doesn't eat.
