I was watching a programme the other night about vets. A blue and gold Macaw was brought in to have his beak and nails trimmed. Neither the vet nor the nurses were very confident about handling him and he flew around the surgery before they managed to get him wrapped in a towel and that was done by the owner. Once wrapped up he had to be held on the table by the owner and a nurse while the vet did his work. I was surprised that the vet didn't have gloves on when he was trimming the beak as he knew what Macaws were capable of. He did get nipped in the process but not as hard as it could have been.

Having african greys definitely made me way, way more scared of the beaks of cockatoos and macaws!! One guy I used to meet up with to free fly Manzi, had a macaw. He said it was really nice and I could pet him, but I saw it lunge after someone once and thought, "Nope!"

I have a friend with two blue and gold macaws. She brought one here and her son was chasing it around. It had so much patience with the child. It was very friendly and sat on my husband's knee. That was a long time ago and the child is a grown man now.
Anytime I take Chy to the vet, she always has me hold her while she puts a towel around her. I also hold her during the examination and beak/nail trimming.
We haven't been to the vet since the start of Covid.
