Hi all,
How many hours/toilets does it take for beetroot to work itself out of the system? Aka ate raw beet, cooked green beans, and raw carrot for dinner last night and he just had a red crap. The morning load wasn't red or orange, it happened around lunch time. Could it be the beetroot and I'm just freaking out, or should I take him to the vet ASAP? His behaviour and eating habit's haven't changed at all, apart from him eating a bit more since he started his moult.
Thanks.

I would think it is due to the beetroot.

It can be alarming, especially if you have momentarily forgotten what they have eaten, as I once did! Blueberries can have the same result.

I used to give mine the multicolored pellets, and every couple days Manzi would change his favorite pellet, which would then change his poop. Quite the rainbow of possible colors in their droppings!!

Hi Jane,
Yes it was alarming haha. I did forget that he had beetroot the night before because it wasn't the same as our food (I normally feed him what we eat if it doesn't have any oil, salt, or sugar, etc. in it), but yeah, I forgot about the beetroot. I have heard so, he doesn't like blueberries for some reason. He will eat all the other fruit in his bowl (I put the fruit as part of his vegetable chop, it's the only way he eats any fruit or seeds), but he doesn't eat them so I stopped buying them. I will get some more in a few months to see if his tastes have changed.
Hi Adele,
Aka's normal pellets are brown but I give him the coloured pellets as a treat (when he takes them without biting my hand) because they have a fruity flavour, but he doesn't eat enough of them for it to change the colour of his poop. Although I did give him a few light green ones as part of his normal pellets a few weeks ago and his poop became that lime green colour, you know the colour that all the parrot websites say is "Take your parrot to the vet NOW because he has intestinal parasites". I looked closely and the colour of the poop was exactly the same colour as the coloured pellets so I wasn't too worried.
I'm pretty sure that if I lived in the US, I would be getting ad's for parrot toys and parrot food because my Google searches are mainly parrot related. Google finishes my sentences for me now: Can my -African Grey eat (insert food item)- haha
