Hi everyone,
So Aka has started his baby moult. I keep finding feathers (not more than one-two a day) on the cage floor and his sleep cage. The moult took a bit longer than usual (I thought it happened at eight months, but he is ten months now), but he is definitely moulting. The feathers aren't damaged at all, you can see the whole feather as well as the shaft so he's not pulling them out or chewing them.
I have a few questions. The most important question is: Do I need to give him any supplements? We have a product here that is available in South Africa and most breeders use this brand (they have a variety of products). I have also used them before. This is the same company that makes the antibiotics I am currently giving Aka.
Can I give him the product (it's called Pre-Molt, company is MedPet) while giving him the antibiotics? I have contacted another vet but I haven't received a reply yet and its been a week so they are either too busy or not interested. The original vet is also a no-show so I can't ask him (I have but he and his receptionist aren't replying to my emails.) The antibiotics will end in the middle of next month some time.
Is there anything else I can give him to make it easier on him? He doesn't seem that fazed and he isn't eating a whole lot more which is what the vet would happen when I saw him in person last, as well as various parrot websites. It's actually quite cute because when he preens, some down feathers stick to his beak and he tries to get them off by using the bars of the cage or his bowls and when they don't come off he just kind of shakes them off.
How long does the baby moult last? Most websites say up to two years? If that's the case that is totally fine, but that seems excessive. Would I need to give him extra supplements (or food like extra protein etc.) for the entire two years of the moult?
Thanks
