So Aka and I have started this thing, I don't even remember how it started, I was probably in the kitchen. Anyway, he will whistle and I whistle back, matching his tone and type of whistle the best I can, then he waits for few seconds and does it again. I copy him again and then he makes that throaty whistle that I can't do. So I say "I can't make that sound" and he whistles like normal again and I copy. Wash, rinse, repeat.
I started whistling today (instead of waiting for him to whistle first) and he copied me every time! It was so cute, the neighbours probably think we bought another parrot because they hear two whistles now. Its great if I'm in the kitchen (where he isn't allowed). He's in the lounge and he whistles and I copy him, and then I whistle and he copies me. Its quite entertaining because I'm sure he makes up more complex whistles as the whistling session continues to see if I can copy him.

I think you are right,he probably is making up more complex whistles for you to copy.
I have never been able to whistle but Mitzi sometimes makes a clicking noise which I copy. She starts with a small number of them but then increases both the number and the speed as if she is testing me to get it right.

Hi Jane,
I think so too, when I am thinking about how to copy the more complex ones I am quiet for a bit and he whistles normally to make sure I'm still there.
Hi beakertout, I played that sound when Aka was in the room, he looked up to try and see where the sound was coming from. Maybe I should get one, he doesn't hate it obviously haha.
I have an alarm on my phone that goes off every two hours otherwise I forget to drink water, I am waiting for Aka to start copying that.He tries but he's not 100% there yet.

When he starts to talk, he will begin to call your name rather than whistle. Chyloe usually calls for her daddy. She keeps it up until he answers her.

I will be super impressed if he says my name properly. Then again, he will probably learn to say it faster than my friends. I don't have the easiest name and people I've known for years still struggle haha. When he says my name I'll ask them what their issue is since my parrot can say my name. Haha
