Hi everyone,
I'm sorry if this has been asked/answered before. I went through the posts and couldn't find this question specifically.
My parrot has just been weaned (he's 11.5 weeks), he is eating normal food during the day, some mixed veggies, legumes, a little bit of fruit, and about 2 tsp of seeds. Each of those small dishes come to about 10g each (except the seeds which total 3-4g), and then his breakfast and supper comes to about 5g each.
He weighs 470 grams, and on the other parrot websites they suggest feeding a CAG about 10% of their body weight. In this case, and if this is true, I should be feeding him about 47g of food a day (which I do), with the day food and breakfast and supper combined. Is this right? The pellets are on their way (thanks to the festive season and their odd/closed office hours) so I will swap the legumes with pellets when they get here. I just want to make sure he's getting enough.
Is the 10% body weight of 47-50g a day too much, too little, or just right?
A little note: He was smaller than his nest mates when I got him, he was fed the same amount of food as his nest mates by the breeder, and he's still growing like mad, but he does look a bit younger than 11.5 weeks if you compare him.
Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much about an exact weight of food because it depends on how nutrition dense it is, and his weight will vary. Greys don't tend to overeat and are notoriously wasteful so if he is eating everything you give him give him some more and weigh him on a regular basis.

AG's (at least domestic ones) are very wasteful. When I first got Beaker I remember threatening him with a lesson on how foi gras is made.

Hi Jane, OK thanks that makes me feel a little better. He stops eating and leaves his food when he's full so I'm not' too worried about him over-eating. Some nights he'll eat more than others. I weigh him about once a week, he's grown a bit since then but he has also been very hungry. I feed him more now than I did a few weeks ago, I just don't want to overfeed him. I'll keep weighing him and see if there are big changes and adjust accordingly.
At the moment he isn't that wasteful, beakertrout. He's just just been weaned so the food he has in his cage now is still a novelty for him, he eats almost everything but chucks the carrots out, but only if they are cubed haha. I will see when he's been eating on his own for a few days/weeks.
I'll keep feeding him what I am feeding him and add if I see he's very hungry (he walks to the kitchen because he knows that's where I keep/make the food) I'll adjust. It should bet better once I have the pellets.
Thanks again.

Chy is like Beaker. She throws her food. Haz I have actually got Beaker not to fling food anymore when he is on my desk. He now wipes it on everything.

Haha yes, Aka does this too. His favourite serviette is either my pants or the couch cushions. In his defense, the cushions are made from soft twine so it really helps get the food off.

Mitzi loves Nutriberries but she still manages to waste a lot. Then she will deliberately empty the food bowls by grabbing footfuls and throwing them over the side.
Monty doesn't waste much; he can't hold food in his feet so he eats whatever he can get his beak on.

Chy loves Nutriberries too and does waste a lot. She was throwing out her pellets and I told her to stop. She then asked me, "what are you pooing about". She is a little brat.

Lately Beaker is "cleaning his plate" and eating everything in his bowl.
He has been acting hormonal with my son, who doesn't want any "presents".
What a nut!
