Hi all, My husband and I adopted an 8 week old African Grey (yes, we know how to hand-feed him ) because his right foot doesn't work properly. No 1., it's at a 90° angle from his ankle, and no 2., because of this, the muscles are very weak. He doesn't let that bother him, except when he sleeps since he can't sleep standing up properly and has to sleep against the glass (he is too young for a cage) otherwise he falls over. He is adorable and growing/feathering very quickly, and I'm just really happy that I/we get to experience this His name is Aka, which is Japanese for red. Thanks for reading.

That's amazing. It's so great you took in the little guy to give him his best life.

Jane is the best person to advise you. One of her greys has trouble with his feet.

Hi Adele,
Aka is good thanks, he is still moulting and he is a bit out of balance as a result. The flight feathers have only grown back on his left wing so he kind of just 'plops' when he tries to fly from his perch from his cage.
He fell yesterday becasue of this and I got a fright because he started bleeding. I couldn't find any wounds and he didn't seem too bothered, just annoyed. This was exactly the same reaction when I touched his feather cyst before we had it removed. What I think happened was he had another feather cyst and I didn't realise it, and when he fell, it opened. The bleeding stopped after about 30 seconds (I had corn starch ready but I couldn't find where he was bleeding from), and after that, he was a bit irritable but carried on like normal. He went about his business like usual after that.
His adult feathers are coming in gradually though, I thought it would be more noticeable to be honest, the baby vs. adult feathers but they blend in really well. That might be an evolutionary/survival thing to help the baby greys to become less of a target. He also says "hello" properly now. It's really cute, but he freaked me out the other morning because he said "hello" in my voice. I was only half awake (it was the morning) but that woke me up properly haha.
He still refuses to take any food/treat from my hand unless it's banana, but even then he tries to bite my hand first. He is also using his toilet more and more now. Apart from when he is eating, he has started holding it until he can go in the toilet. We haven't been able to get a rope for him to get there himself but will do soon. I went out today for about two hours and he waited for me so I could take him to the toilet. It was really cool, it really helps with the cleaning haha.
How is Maui? Have her eyes become worse?
