What is it with Nature when it is the norm for the females to eat the males before they even get a chance to mate. In previous programmes it was a Praying Mantis chomping through the head of the male but at least he did mate with her.
This time it was some sort of Orb spider and she just kept eating the males as soon as she saw them. She was much bigger than the males and they all knew what their fate might be because they were clearly terrified and very nervous about going anywhere near her but biologically programmed to do just that.
Eventually one male did manage to mate with her and escape without being eaten but that could have simply been due to the fact that she wasn't hungry at that time rather than some sort of selection procedure ensuring that the best male succeeded in fathering her offspring.

I just saw a video of someone finding an Orb spider in their salad that they bought from a fast food place. It was a pretty gnarly looking spider that would freak me out if it surprised me!!

I can't remember what sort of Orb spider it was. As spiders go they were in the more attractive range. She had a large round pinkish abdomen. The males had smaller oval reddish abdomens.
I remember I once had a pack of tomatoes from the Netherlands and when I opened the pack a spider ran out. It did give me a fright!
