I was watching a new David Attenborough nature documentary last night. There was a Nursery Web spider and David Attenborough said that the male takes a present of food to the female to persuade her to mate. He wraps the food into a parcel with silk and when he is happy with the appearance of his gift he presents it to her. There was footage of him scampering around with his parcel and offering it to a female. He mates with as many females as he can but he has to give her a gift each time and this particular spider had decided to cheat. First of all he wrapped up the remains of a fly that he found rather than one he caught and when this worked he became more confident and started wrapping up anything he found that he thought might be suitable such as bits of flower. "It isn't even food!" said David Attenborough incredulously. Apparently this type of deviousness is rare.

That's funny and so like a male to try to get away with something!
