Hi all,
my little mate has been plucking for years now. I have taken him to the vet a few times, but have always been told its behavoiral or psychological. But it has got real bad recently so I took him elsewhere. The new vet said she would start from scratch with blood and poo test. She told me that zinc is considered at dangerous levels if it is 40..........Melrins is 81! I thought I was doing everytihng correct, harrisons pellets, vegies at lunch and then fruit for dinner. Below is a full break down of his bloods. I cant wwok out what i have done wrong. I have since found out that cornflakes are high....he did eat a few with me a day....maybe that? Found out that cashews are high......I used to use these for treats ...cant see why its so high. Is there zinc in plastic? He was chewing on a hose pipe connector and I was worried that he was swallowing bits, so I took it off him, could it be that?
Any help would great.......he is going into the vets tomorrow for 5 days to have chelation therapy.... Calcium Disodium Versenate / Calcium EDTA. i am very worried.......but if I cant find the cause then what?
Feather plucking profile. Lab Number 113190
BIOCHEMISTRY
Albumin * 26 g/L High (9.0 - 18.0)
Total Protein * 61 g/L High (27.0 - 44.0)
Uric Acid 144 umol/L (100 - 500 )
Bile Acid 61.0 umol/L
AST 189 IU/L (0.0 - 500 )
Creatine Kinase * 837 IU/L High (140 - 411 )
Sodium 152 mmol/l
Potassium 10.2 mmol/l
*Overnight sample*
Calcium 1.91 mmol/L (1.65 - 2.68)
Ionised Calcium * 0.79 mmol/l Low ( 0.96-1.22 )
Zinc 81.1 umol/l
General guide line for Zinc Levels
Levels of over 40 umol/l are considered indicative of zinc toxicity.
HAEMATOLOGY
White Cell Count * 2.7 10^9/l Low (3.3 - 10.3)
Haemoglobin * 13.6 g/dl Low (14.2 - 17.1)
PCV * 34 % Low (45 - 53
MCHC * 40.0 g/dL High (28.9 - 34.0)
WBC Differential
Heterophils 70% 1.9 10^9/l (1.85 - 7.31)
Lymphocytes * 26% 0.70 10^9/l Low (1.8 - 4.8 )
Monocytes 4% 0.1 10^9/l (00.0 - 0.19)
No polychromasia but moderate agglutination within erythrocyte series. Mild leucopaenia noted but no toxic or macrophaging leucocytes seen. Thrombocytes appear normal in structure and number on film.
Haematology demonstrates a mild leucopaenia and apparently non regenerative anaemia which can be a feature of underlying chronic disease, debilitation and/or malnutrition. I believe also of significance is an elevated zinc which at such level indicative of toxicity, a mild hypocalcaemia which may reflect sub optimal nutrition/UVB exposure and a hyperproteinemia consistent with a
degree of dehydration at time of sampling and/or increase in the globulin fraction in response to antigenic stimulation. PBFD results to follow.
Aerobic cultures show a heavy mixed growth consistent with normal faecal flora
Campylobacter : Negative
Salmonella : Negative
Yeasts : Negative
Gram Stain 30% Gram negative rods
30% Gram positive cocci
30% Gram positive rods
10% Yeasts
PBFD PCR Negative
Chlamydia PCR Avian/Feline Negative
