I have a 23 yr old African grey female. She started having seizures about 7 yrs ago. My dog ( just passed away)and he was able to detect the seizure right before
she started to seize and alerted us! She hasn’t had an episode in a long while till recently. I’m thinking it’s because of our moving to a new home and my dog (who just passed away) has triggered the seizures! I brought her to the Vet and they want me to give her Anti-seizure meds. I really don’t want to start this because the seizures are not often. The vet did say that certain seeds are not good for her. Can anyone tell me which seeds I can give her? I also had cherrios with milk in the mornings with and vet told me no! I appreciate any input. thanks kathy

The vet is probably referring to sunflower seeds because too many can inhibit the absorption of other nutrients such as calcium and a deficiency of calcium can cause seizures.
Birds can't digest milk because they don't have the enzyme needed to break down the natural sugar in milk.
What is her usual diet?

I have a female that is 35 yrs old and she has seizures too, but her are specifically stressed-induced. So if she's taken to the vet, she'll for sure have a seizure on the way there, and maybe another one at the vet's office. I can take her outside into an aviary in the back, but even introducing her to that was a slow process. I'd only walk her 10 feet closer each day out the back door. Even the change in brightness from inside to outside cause seizures. But now she can be put outside easily each morning, because she is used to it.
The vets ran all kinds of blood tests. Nothing came up as a red flag. She is old and on the geriatric side. I spoke with another vet who has had experience with larger parrots and said stress-induced seizures are fairly common in some parrots, and you can only really manage the stress.
How is your female just before a seizure? Is she doing any activity? Or even a car's light flashing at her from outside? Light is a big trigger for my female.
If there are no obvious signs, and the blood work all came back normal, and the frequency is low (like less than one per week), then I'd also probably question anti-seizure meds. They aren't well tested on African Greys and it is really just guesswork at dosages.

Thank you....I’ve switched her to baby food sweet potatoes, kale, apricot etc. along with her pellets. I haven’t given her any seeds. So far she’s doing excellent, she hasn’t had a seizure since. I afraid to give her any seeds.....I just give her zupreen pellets. She was so used to us giving her pretzels or chips when she saw us eating them. We don’t do this anymore. What seeds are beneficial for her, And should I give it to her now?

That's good, sounds like she is doing well now. Pumpkin seeds have good nutrients.
