Do any parrots here have more than one place where they might sleep from one night to the next? Jax has always slept in his cage, which is in the Family room, the most active room in the house. The cage door is always open, and I've built "balconies" all around the outside of the cage, but every night Jax chooses to go into his cage to the same spot to sleep.
We have a second large open jungle gym type station in my computer/music room, and he hangs out there whenever I'm in that room. During the day, he flies between the two locations at will, and probably splits his time 50/50. But we've always taken him to his cage once it was night time, if he wasn't already there.
For many years we did not cover the cage, but we do now. Once Jax goes into the cage, we cover all but the door. However, there are often evenings I watch TV in that room until 11 or 12pm. I've often wondered how much the TV sound and whatever light bleeds through the cover into the cage disturb's Jax.
It's often quieter and darker at the music room station much earlier in the evening, but we have no way of covering that station, and as I mentioned, Jax seems to prefer the security of being inside his cage when he sleeps. Still, I wonder if it might be better to let him sleep at the 2nd location if I'm going to be watching TV into the wee hours.
So that's my dilemma. I just don't know if it would be good to have him sleeping in different places on a random basis depending on where I plan to hang out, thereby giving him the most quiet time possible. Or if it's better to always sleep him in the same place, despite my late night TV habits. I'm also concerned about how he might feel sleeping at the open gym with no cage and no cover.
Opinions?

I notice Beaker sleeps better now that the sheet I use to cover him is bigger.
Even so, he hears everything going on and chimes in when he thinks he needs to.
He has a boing in the garage and upstairs and I know he naps out on occasion.
I changed my late night TV to the upstairs as Beaker sleeps downstairs.
The sacrifices we make!

Mine have always been covered and as soon as they see me pick it up they climb onto their sleeping perches. They do need a good night's sleep. I think Jax has chosen his favourite place to sleep and it might unsettle him to move him.

Thanks for the feedback.
BeakerTrout: I suppose I could moderate my TV habits. It's not like I'm watching anything important, but I do like to loaf on the sofa and veg out on re-runs for a while before going to sleep.
Jane: Yeah, sleeping at the gym location would be a totally different feel... no cover, no cage. Would be an adjustment for sure.

Chyloe's cage is in the family room. I put her to bed at 9:00 p.m. Even though she is covered, she doesn't go to sleep right away. We don't go to sleep until after midnight. However, we move our TV viewing up to the bedroom around 10:00 p.m. As we are leaving the family room, Chy usually makes some comment like reminding me to put on the dishwasher.

Sheeba wants to go in her cage at around 9pm, occasionally she will sit with us while the TV is on after that, but she lets me know when she's tired. Definitely creatures of habit.

You guys with birds that talk in your presence are lucky. Jax rarely talks unless he's been left alone.
I feel a little better knowing I'm not the only one who doesn't put my bird in quiet isolation as soon as it get's dark. It really just isn't practical to do that if you're going to have the cage in the home's most active room.
I have so much crap attached to the outside of Jax's cage (swing that's taller than the cage, shelves, sofa barrier, balconies), we can't even get the cage completely covered with one cover. Plus we intentionally leave an opening at the doorway so he can go in when he wants (which is usually shortly after dark, even when the TV is on). I'm thinking about getting a second cover, we could do a better job if we had two.
Once he goes in the cage, he won't come out again, no matter how late I watch TV. But I figure he's not able to sleep until I turn it off. Even if we got it pitch dark for him, I imagine the sound would still keep him up.
Guess that's just the price Jax will have to pay for being domesticated.
