Maui came to me with black eye specs in the yellow of her eyes. She's been to avian vets several times, and they always said the black specs must have been there since birth and is of no concern. Recently though, I noticed that Manzi has a black spec in his eye now. I checked his previous photos and he didn't used to have that spec, so he definitely wasn't born with it. I've tried google searches and can't find anything with this. Has anyone ever seen this before? Thanks.

I haven't seen any in Monty and Mitzi. In humans black specks in the iris can be caused by exposure to the sun and are increased clusters of melanin. This article talks about light stimulation and iris flecking in cuckoos: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5548743/Jane

Jane, that article is great. Manzi is outside a lot more over the past year due to our outside aviary. He used to be out quite a bit when he was free flying too. Maui came to me with several black spots in her iris, but she was always inside in a cage. Anyway, not really sure what is going on, but I still don't think it is due to health issues.
Thanks.

Manzi just got another red feather on his back. I read that red feathers grown later in life may be a sign of health issues. His weight is fine and he's just as active as ever. I feel like I'm paranoid, with his eye specs and now two red feathers on his back. The vet thinks they are all fine too. Anyone have a Grey that grew red feathers randomly after reaching maturity?

One of Mitzi's small feathers on the front of her neck/chest is partly pinkish red. She never used to have any pink/red feathers where grey should be.
Monty is the other way regarding his feathers; he has always had a tail feather that varies between half red, half grey and completely grey at each molt. It is currently completely grey.

Sid is 12 years old, he has always had three red feathers, one mid lower chest, and one on each side of lower chest. Everyone said they would fall out and change to grey by the time he was 5. They are still there thank goodness, adds to his handsomeness. I wonder if Manzi, and other grey's may sometimes get red feathers with age as a natural process. After all humans change to grey with age.

Manzi has always had one small red feathers on his shoulder/neck, but now he has two more on his back. Both small ones. Just the emergence of those at the same time as his eye specs are puzzling/concerning. The avian vet said she had never heard of it being a problem and didn't have any experienced input about it.

Chy has always had pink feathers on her body under her wings. She has had no changes in her feather colours.
