Hi just after some help. I understand that African Greys need 12 hours sleep and it does not have to be all in one 12 hour period. However I am a little confused, when we go out we leave Pebbles in her cage uncovered and I have presumed rightly or wrongly that she will go to sleep like this. However I have now been told that I should really cover her cage when we go out so she can get some sleep. When we are at home Pebbles is out of the cage and with us and this could be for hours at a time and she seems to love it but also she could be alone for 3 or 4 hours at a time. I'm just a little confused now as to whether I am doing the right thing. Hope this makes sense.

You should not assume they just shut down and go to sleep when you are not there.
If they are alone at night I would cover.
I assume you have a "schedule" that you sort of follow.
I let Beaker "burn it" on weekends and stay up later then normal.

We have aa routine with her and she seems quite content. She goes to bed when we do and gets up with us on a morning. She has a lot of freedom when we are at home. She has a black out cover over her cage when we put her in on a night before we go to bed.

That sounds like a good routine. I wouldn't cover her in the day as that would confuse her. If she feels she needs a nap in the day she will have one.

We cover Chyloe at 9:00 p.m. although we go to bed later. She gets uncovered around 7:00 a.m. Sometimes she will nap in the afternoon. Whenever we are home, her cage door is open so she can come and go. We never cover her during the day.

Thanks for all your advice guys. I'm totally new to this we have only had her for three months, I just want what's best for Pebbles. She has loads of freedom as when we are home the cage is open and she can come and go as she feels. The majority of the time though she just wants to sit with us and play. I just got a little confused with the sleep thing as I was told I should cover her up when we go out, I thought it didn't seem fair to cover her up for that long. Thanks again, I'm sure I will be back with more questions.
