Hello everyone! I’m about a month into owning my first grey. I must say she’s absolutely incredible and I’m loving taking care of her. My schedule changes everyday with some days I’m home all day, others I’m gone all day. My grey (Aura) is free every time I’m home and can come in and out as she pleases. I have a couple of questions to ask, first being what I can make or buy to entertain her while I’m away because she spooks easily of toys, and won’t go near her foraging wheel or ball (because they are round) haha. Second our summers get very humid and hot. I do not have AC and wondering about ways to keep her cool during the days I’m not home & available to keep misting her with some cool water.
Thankyou so much!! Xx

Welcome.
I will not leave Beaker unattended.
Just an invitation for disaster.

The only time she is alone (locked in her cage) is while I’m at work. She will never be in harms way..

Hello and welcome to the forum. Many Greys are nervous of new toys but most enjoy tearing up paper and cardboard. You can make toys just using pieces of paper and cardboard - I do that for Mitzi. You can also buy toys which incorporate rolls of paper. I get till rolls to put in them.

Welcome to the forum.
Most greys are afraid of toys at first. However, give them time to realize that the toy is not going to eat them and they take great enjoyment out of destroying toys. It can take months in some cases.
My Chyloe loves the inner cardboard tube from paper towels and enjoys chomping wood. She has destroyed several wooden perches and the soft colourful braided perches. I buy wooden slats in bulk and make her toys with them.
As far as summer heat is concerned, greys can tolerate quite a range in temperature as long as the heat change is gradual. On the days you are home, watch how she reacts. If she is overheated, she will hold her wings out from her body. Keep the blinds closed to keep the sun out to avoid overheating the place and put a bowl of water on the bottom of her cage so that she can dunk herself if feeling too warm.

They can be frightened of anything new - toys, perches, something new in the room, or even something you are wearing. They do usually come round in time, curiosity gets the better of them in the end.
It can help to see you playing with the toys to show they are nothing to be frightened of. They often want anything you have got. Mitzi just sends Monty to investigate as he is very unusual for a Grey and isn't frightened of anything.
