HI I have recently acquired an African Grey and she has been fine. Ove the last couple of days one of her feet has started to turn a brown colour near the claw and underneath. I have never owned a bird before and I am not sure if this is a normal occurrence. She seems perfectly healthy and walks on the foot with no problem and has a very tight grip with it when she steps up. If anyone could advise it would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Has she been holding anything that could have stained it - food of some sort maybe or something from a toy?

Hello and welcome to the forum. Has she been holding anything that could have stained it - food of some sort maybe or something from a toy? Jane I wonder if that's what it could be. I have been feeding her red peppers, carrots, chilli's etc. I will stop giving her them and see if anything changes. She's very active and eating very well and her foot does not seem to bother her so maybe it is as you have suggested. Many thanks

Ah yes that sounds most likely to be the cause then, most probably the red peppers. I wouldn't stop feeding them to her, they are good for her and the staining won't hurt her feet.

Welcome to the forum.
As well as staining her foot, deep coloured food can also affect the colour of her droppings so don't be alarmed if that happens.

Thanks, I have kept her off peppers, chilli's etc and put her on mainly greens and the foot doesn't seem as dark today. Hopefully it is what you have suggested. This is all new to me so I'm learning day by day. I didn't mean keep her completely of the peppers, chilli's etc. I am trying to vary her diet as much as possible.

I have noticed the same thing with Hector's feet, it is probably the red peppers. The first time he had blackberries, his poop was purple and I had a mild heart attack before I realized what it was from.
