I have a wonderful rescue African grey. He is very calm and sweet. But sometimes when he sees me, like I approach him with a toy or food treat, he will fluff up his feathers. He sometimes, but not always moves away from me. I do not know how to read this body language. I tend to believe it is a way to show he wants to be left alone. Ideas? Susan

Sounds like a "preparing for flight" reaction.
The moving away is a sign. IMO

They do this when they are unsure about something or someone. It could be something you are wearing or the toy you are holding.
