Good Afternoon,
I was hoping for some input. My African Grey is molting, but her wings look horrible. She is pulling on them so hard that they just look horrible. Is that normal? As I said in other post, I have only had her for about a month, I have had my Senegal for awhile and when he molts he does not do that. Should I be worried or is that normal?
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Melynda

AG's drop feathers and fluff like no tomorrow.
However, they shouldn't look shopworn.

Are her wings clipped? A bad clip can cause problems. Also what was her cage like when she was with the previous owners, if it was too small and they never let her out the feathers can get messed up as she moves around.

Good Afternoon, They actually do look worn. They tried to clip her wings before I got there to buy her(without my knowledge), but since they never handled her they messed it up and it looked real bad, but now they look worse. They are choppy. I am really worried. When I took her to the vet when I first bought her and he said they will look better after she molts. I also do not know what kind of cage she lived in, when I got there she was in a travel cage and they would not take her out, they said they can't cause she would bite. Which is sad because she is the biggest cuddly baby. She has a huge cage now, and is only in it at night.
Thank You, Melynda & Harley

The bad clip is why she is pulling on them. She is trying to preen them but they are not as they were and it is confusing her. In time they will molt.

It was very STUPID of them to try to clip the wings having never handled her.
All those feathers will have to molt (best scenario) out.
Other feathers may come in first so she may look even more ragged.
The big cage is probably the best thing you could do.

They were horrible people, they had so many birds crammed into tiny cages all in this little room and everything was so dirty it made me so upset. But she is by far the best bird in the world, so someone loved her very much before they had her. To be honest with you, I called the humane society animal police and gave them the info and their address.

So glad your AG has you as a parent - sounds like going to have a great home. Best of luck!
