Today we added a new member to our family. He is a 7 year old Congo African Grey.. We are very excitied, and we look forward to many many years..
My question is, he came with a name (of course) that we don't really love.. Do we want to learn to love it, or is it something that over time he would adjust to if we changed it??
i don't want to cause any added stress on him.
Any advice would be very much appreciated..
Thanks in advance!!

Hello and welcome to the forum. If he knows his name and responds to it I would keep it or maybe you could change it to one that sounds similar. With mine I use their names and they know and respond to their names but I also sometimes use nicknames as well.

My girl Ash knows her name, but responds better to several nicknames. Maybe a nickname based on some sounds he makes or something.

I adopted a bird that was previously called 'baby' which I was not happy with. So I picked a name, Abbey, For about a month I called her Abbey Baby, then I would leave off the Baby, she adapted wonderfully and would frequently yell her new name ' Abbey, Abbey, Abbey'

My Chyloe knows her name, address and telephone number. We have various nicknames for her. She uses the nicknames when addressing other people but will only use Chyloe or Chy Chy when referring to herself.

Haz-What a wonderful post! Everyone should teach the bird to say her address and phone number!!! Remember, if your bird should someday be spooked and fly out the door, she doesn't know what your ROOF looks like, to find her way home. Granted, some people may encounter a tame (valuable) bird and not even try to find her home, but what better way to help her get back otherwise! There are too many heartbreaking stories of lost birds, who quite often become prey to hawks or hit by cars, as they don't know how to survive in the so-called "real" world.

Good Evening, I considered changing my baby's name when I got her. I thought she didn't know hers. She did not respond to it, and I didn't especially like the name. I started calli g her princess (They called her Harley). Then after I had her for about 3 weeks she woke up one morning and just kept saying "Hello Harley, Hey Harley, Hi Harley". So I realized I could never change her name. So I would make sure that your baby doesn't know his/her name before you change it.

My 7.5 year-old CAG, Aziza, says her name...beautifully! It's so great to hear that!
