Chy occasionally falls off a perch. Her perches are on five different levels of her cage. When she falls, it always seems to be off the highest perch so she has a long way to fall down. Errol says it would be worse in the wild if she fell out of a tree. Since she can't grow flight feathers on one wing, she would not survive in the wild.
Still, it concerns me that she falls so far. She attacks her toys while twisting and going upside down. Sometimes, she saves herself but once in a while she makes that quick trip to her basement.

Monty falls off his perches quite a lot because of the problems with his wings and his feet. It is alarming but I am amazed he has never hurt himself. He looks a bit bewildered and then either climbs back up or wanders around on the cage floor as if he got there on purpose.

Sheeba also falls off her perch at night. I am a light sleeper so I wake up and come to her rescue, she is usually on the floor looking bewildered. She cracked her right pelvis a few years ago and I am worried it will be a problem if she lands wrong. It isn't a long way to the floor of her cage from her perch, about 12 inches. I put a second perch next to her regular sleeping perch a few months ago, so she can now catch herself when she falls. So far, she hasn't fallen. Fingers crossed, knock on wood...

The Doodle did it too until Dr de Beer suggested i give him a magnesium & calcium suppliment which almost miraculously did the trick. Apparently its because the magnesium can only be absorbed by the parrots body using some calcium, and the muscles need the magnesium to function properly, so when there's a lack of mag in the diet, a subtle sign is the "fall off the perch when asleep" thing. Anyway, it worked for the Doodle monster. The powder suppliment -Calcimag Avian - was dissolved in his drinking water.
