Yesterday, a lovebird landed in my neighbour's yard. I am the go-to person in the neighbourhood regarding birds. It was very tame and just stepped up when asked.
I posted the find on our local parrot club's Facebook page. Then searched for lost pets in Ottawa on the Internet. The bird had been posted in "Lost Pets Ottawa". Within minutes of me phoning the person, people from the Parrot Club sent me the same info. The lovebird had been outside in its cage and a raccoon had brought the cage down breaking it.
It was a happy ending with lovie back home.

Brilliant news. What an ordeal for the poor lovebird. Thank goodness you were there to help it get safely back home.

She had only been lost from the day before but was very hungry. Perhaps she didn't know to eat from bird feeders in people's yards. At my house she ate for half an hour nonstop. Then she put her head in her back and fell asleep.
When her owner arrived, she was very chirpy.

I'm the un-official go-to person in our town for lost/injured birds too and it's weird to see from what kind of places people have brought me lost birds. I once found a starving Sun Conure on our washing line in the middle of winter and although she was ringed I couldn't trace her owner so I kept her and eventually got her a companion. In another case a family found a very tame Indian Ringneck that literally walked freely around their house for a few hours (with unclipped wings) but since they didn't know how or what to feed it they brought it over to me. The poor thing was starved to death and started eating the second he saw food and took a treat from my hand without hesitation.
Since I throw out my parrots old food into bird-feeders there's always birds around including at least one lovebird and what looked like an Amazon that I haven't managed to get hold of. At least I take comfort from the fact that they get food from the feeders.
