Hello everyone and greetings from South Jersey! I finally made it to an African Grey forum! I'm glad to be here. I'm thrilled to tell you that I'm a first time Grey owner and "Gerty" is my Grey. She is an absolute SWEET HEART! I have owned small birds before and several years ago. Gerty is 15 years old and I am her 3rd owner.
I was a little hesitant to start with an older bird but man o man is she awesome! Her last owner ended up actually being allergic to her. I read up for a month and a half prior to getting Gerty on anything I could find about Grey's. I wanted to move slow with her as I know time is a bird's friend. She is such a good bird, she was out of the cage and on my arm in 3 days. She just wants to be loved and loved is what she is. Great vocabulary, tons of whistles (several annoying) and loves to be petted. She lives with me, my wife, and my 7 yo daughter and 3 dogs. Can't say enough good things about her and being that this is my first post, I will stop squawking and go read some more.
Thanks for having the forum and I look forward to meeting you all.

Welcome to the forum! That is great that she has already warmed up to you. It can take them hours, to years to warm up to a new environment.

Many thanks! She's been getting more "snuggly" every day. I think its one advantage of an older Grey. She's been there done that and knows what she likes. I just have to figure it out... and not get bit....lol

Welcome to the forum.
It is wonderful that Gerty has settled in so well. We hear many stories where people have to be so patient to win an older bird's trust. You were lucky that she took to you so quickly.
You are going to have fun with her. We will enjoy hearing your stories.

Her favorite thing so far is to just sit on my chest and with her beak against my chest and just letting me pet her. She doesn't really explore or want to play... just to be petted. She lets out a little "coo" noise when she wants to be petted. I always make that noise prior to petting her. So far our communication has been great.
