Hello everyone, I am Carole and have an African Grey called Mojo hatched in Sep 2002. He was bought for me as an unexpected Christmas present in December of that year . Shamefully he was bought due to a flippant remark I made to my adult daughter. Stumbling on the fact that my husband was intending to buy me a Tortoise for Christmas after accidentally discovering a Tortoise Handbook,I stated that no way did I want one and would rather have a parrot. My husband took the remark literally and on Christmas day itself, Mojo was delivered to my home by the Breeder. I have always been scared of birds-even my Nan's harmless Budgie, so was terrified of Mojo who bit me on the first day, drawing blood quite badly.
I have joined this forum as I don't feel that I have done this little fellow justice as am not as confident in handling him as I would wish. There is so much to learn about Greys that no amount of handbooks can impart. My husband refuses to go near him and if he walks towards him with his John Wayne stance,he will ask me to come and get him. Mojo copies everything hubby says and hardly anything I have tried to teach him. He loves hubby playing guitar and makes appropriate noises imitating the electric instrument.I have lost count of the words and sentences he says. He knows every family members name and says it when they visit. From"Morning Sunshine" when I open the curtains to "Morning Soldier" if hubby does? Everyone is fascinated by his amazing vocabulary and he is learning new words and phrases all the time.
I think he would probably have benefited from a more confident handler,as I am sure that I have held him back. Our adult son can handle him a lot better than I can,but as he suffers from asthma he dosen't handle him nowadays when he visits.
But Mojo is very much a member of our family and we wouldn't wish him anywhere else, so hopefully I will be able to pick up some great advice in helping to stimulate him more and harness a greater bond.
