My husband and I just purchased a 5 1/2 month African Grey Timneh from an acquaintance. She also has his parents and two siblings. He was hand fed and used to being around people. The previous owner told us he did not like her and was aggressive and tried to bite her. She warned us that he would pluck a little due to the change. SO far we have him one week and no signs of distress or plucking. He actually seems well adjusted to his new home. I have never had pets but my husband loves birds..... any advise on owning a Timneh? He won't let me touch him but I feed him and he does not try to bite me and he lets me rub his beak from behind the cage, once outside the cage if I get too close he barks at me and flaps his wings. My husband says he senses my fear and I am too jumpy.

hey there, welcome
i tend to agree with your hubby....these birds are seriously smart and very sensitive to your mood....it totally wouldn't surprise me to hear that as you grow in your confidence around your new family member (whats his name, by the way?) he will relax around you.
Please don't hesitate to ask ALL your questions here. We are all avid lovers of our feathered family and care deeply about them. The only silly question is the one you DON'T ask.
Welcome to the group of friends

I have a saying. If a BIRD likes a male, it is a male bird. If it likes a female, it is a female. With that being said, I am not talking about the sex of the bird. I am saying it from the fact that it like a certain sex. My Grey prefers men. She does not care for women. Exposer is one of the best things. Let the bird see that you are not a threat. When the bird is out sit close to your husband. Let the bird see that you are not going to hurt him. Stay calm. Humans put of a scent, and the birds can sense this. TAKE YOUR TIME! It is not going to happen over night. I have a rescue Pionaus that preferred women. It took a year before he realized that I was safe.
Treats outside of the cage is good also.
Little at a time. Smooth easy, show no fear.
Pete

Hi Lenke, His name is Luffy (loufee)I hope you are right because I would like to bond with Luffy Pete we are not sure if he is really a he since we have not gotten a DNA test or gone to the vet yet. I do tend to get startled by Luffy's barking sounds and when he flies toward me too! So I will do as you suggest and start slow. Today He flew right onto my husbands hand and let him rub his head! So far I think he likes his new home so I am hopeful, I just don't want him to be a one person bird! Thanks for your advice! So glad I found this forum!

Welcome to the forum.
If Luffy chooses your husband to be his/her favourite person, that doesn't mean you cannot have a good relationship with him too. Chyloe prefers me but will go to various people. She will announce that she is going to see daddy then toddle off to see him or say that she is going to see mommy and come to me.
Giving treats is a good way to make friends. Have hubby hand him over to you but don't push him if he is reluctant. Let him get used to you then try again.

Today Luffy flew onto my head! Then onto my back then back onto my head I was totally startled but tried to remain calm but Instinctively I bend down when he flies at me and he ends up on my back. He has figured out how to open his cage!!! My husband was not home so I was forced to be brave! lol after 45 minutes I managed to get him back in the cage and off my head. He did not bark or try to bite me at all. I think he was trying to play with me because he does this to my husband but my husband just puts him arm out and Luffy now just goes on his arm and lets my husband pet him. So I am starting to feel hopeful....
