We brought home a new baby grey named Eli five days ago. We are first time bird owners and were very nervous about what we were supposed to do the first few days. We read and researched bird expert sites and tried to figure out the best way to spend the first few days. We have three kids and a bird hunting dog so we were terrified. Needless to say, it was all for no reason. Once we showed Eli that we were not scared of him biting us, he began to get very friendly and cuddly. He even spends time in the room with the dog, both out of their cages and he seems not to care or even be scared. Today we put him in the Jacuzzi for a drenching shower. He loved it and was happy to be there. So I think we have learned to listen to our instincts and not the bird experts.

Welcome to the forum! I watched the video of Eli and he is so adorable. We are here to help and answer any questions that you might have as they come up. Every Grey has their own preferences and likes and dislikes. For example Shayla, my Grey, loves most things that are blue, but stays away from anything yellow like corn or bananas. Also, their preferences may change at the drop of a dime. They do have character traits that are instinctual but they also develop their own personalities. Congratulations on bringing Eli home! Look forward to more videos. Grant

Hello and welcome to the forum. Congratulations. Eli is settling in well. It is always a good idea to take your cue from the Grey and go at their pace; they will certainly let you know what they like and don't like.

Thanks everybody. Actually I do have a question. It is now Wednesday, one week since coming home and Eli seems very low key. He puts his head down for us to scratch him and is not really as active and playful as I thought he would be. We have lots of toys and perches for him but he prefers to stay quietly with us. Should we be worried?

My Auggie did a lot of chilling as a young bird. When he played, he played, when it was time to rest or nap, he did that well too - HA!

like young animals of all kinds (including humans) they will have their crazy days and their quiet days.
If this quiet behaviour runs on for an excessive time (more than 4 or so days) then i'd go get him checked our by a good avian vet.
Other than that, i'd go with the flow, and be grateful for the odd quiet day - when he's in crazy mood, you will WISH for quiet mood!
