Hi there. I am new on this forum - Lenks sent me the link and suggested we join . Thank you Lenke!
We have never owned a parrot and where not really planning on getting one soon. When Lenke and I visited a local pet shop we noticed two little Ruppell chicks, whom where in bad shape. I refrained from buying them on impulse as we are not for caging these birds that belong into our area. We have a resident Ruppel couple that visits us regularly and seeing a caged one breaks my heart.
Ruppel's are not yet on the protected species list but are close. The smuggling trade is having a BIG impact on their numbers here .
Anyways, my husband decided to go get the two, after I told him about them. He had the idea of raising and then releasing but that is not realistic unfortunately.
Well, now we have these cute two babes and will need all the help we can get.
They are currently fed with AviPlus stage 2 feed and they are gaining weight daily - making up for lost nutrition... Lenke suggested to feed them bugs, ground nuts and ground birdseeds. On a site about them I found that they eat worms and spiders - does anyone know whether I can just take any spider I can find or do I have to be careful with venomous spiders. Well, they all have venom but some more dangerous than others.
We live on a farm and therefore we can pick and choose which we want to 'collect'.
The one chick, Rosie, has started exploring everything, wanting to get out and about but Joey is very quiet but eating well. My question about this is, when is it ok to let them climb around outside of their 'nest'?
That is it from me for now, I am sure I will have plenty more questions as the babes grow.
Thank you,
Carmen
