I thought it might be a good idea to introduce ourselves in this thread. Since this is my forum, I'll start off... For personal information I'd like to refer you to my site, www.vdnent.com (choose Non-Parrot Stuff - Meet the Family). I created this site when Dandy was a tiny tod of barely 5 weeks old, and I continued to keep a diary till the moment we had to say good bye. For several years now the site has had a very popupar forum and helped many (potential) bird owners to get just the answers they needed. I can only hope that this new forum will be as popular and as useful as the old one. Thanks for joining us, and don't hesitate to drop a line or two! ;D

Greetings, My name is Preston. My wife and I have had our Grey for a little over two years now. I found Dandy’s Forum about the same time. Unlike other forums; you will not find any “clicks” or arguments here; just polite, and to the best of our ability answers. That’s why I've stayed. I have learned most of what I know about keeping a Grey from reading the website, and visiting the forum. Thanks to Sophia, we now have more flexibility. Please join us, as I for one, find reading and answering posts fulfilling.

Hello My name is Jane and I have two Congo African Greys aged 11 and 13. I also have experience with smaller captive birds and rescued wild birds. The old Dandy forum was a very pleasant place to go and this new one should be just as good, so keep posting! Jane

Hi! My name is Anna Elisa (prounced as "Analisa"). I live in Austin, TX with my boyfriend, two dogs (Lab-Bobby and Rottweiler Crimmie) one cat (Siggie) one lepard Gecko (Zeak) and one African Grey (Tita).
We Recently aquired Tita through a friend of a friend who had 6 birds, 2 of which are c.o.c.k.atoos who were willed to the family. Since the c.o.c.k.atoos need so much care and attention the family was willing to pay it forward and start us off with the Grey ensuring it go to a good home with lots of love and attention.
I started writing to the other Dandy forum after the first night with her. Since then she has done wonderfully. We LOVE her.
Jane, your suggestions and comments were great, thank you! She is becoming so much a part of the family.
She talks to me every morning when she hears me up and in the kitchen making her breakfast. Of course it is not human words yet but mostly whistles! They make me laugh!
Anyways! Thanks so much for being here and sharing so much and being so supportive!
Talk to you all soon!!! ae

My name is Lisagail and I am 2nd mother to Abby who first belonged to my girlfriend. Miss Abby is about to turn 8 and, as expected, she is the focus of our lives. I've only known her for about three years, but we have developed a very nice relationship.
I am Abby's greatest advocate, full-time toy creator, and part-time feeder/house cleaner. Abby has a massive crush on me, and gives her first mother no peace at all if I am not in sight.
Any second parents out there, please know: It takes time to get to know and trust these crafty parrots, but it is so worth it!
I'm probably considered an occasional visitor to these forums, but I read a lot more than I post. I look forward to good discussions here.

Hello, my name is Mary Anne and I have had my grey, Kiko, for almost a year now. He is 14 months old and the love of my life - after my wonderful husband, John - of course. He has recently started talking, and now says his name, Kiko and Kikobird and Hello Kikobird, and he also barks like our shih tzu, Pippa. His newest noise is the sound of a squeaky toy that we bought for Pippa!! It is horrid!! I absolutely Love my baby, and am so glad that there is somewhere we can all share stories and get answers. Thanks so much!!!

For anyone out there who may be getting discouraged because their grey hasn't spoken yet, don't give up!!! Just keep talking to them!!! Zazzy is two years old and has only just recently started talking!! I am thrilled, like a proud parent!!
I enjoy Dandy's forum and all the feedback from everyone. It's so wonderful that there are so many people from around the world sharing a common bond- our precious greys!

Hello! (Silly me, couldn't figure out how to get my posts to come on as a "member" until now!) Thank you so much for hosting this forum. What a helpful resource! I wish I'd known about it when we first brought our bird home! For a bit of my bird-keeping history; my husband and I found ourselves with a few cash gifts after our wedding five years ago and as we were both working students, we decided to use it towards something sensible and long-lasting. So we did alot of research and ended up with our first "child", Arthur, a male CAG parrot. He is now four years old and quite sassy. Favorite vocalizations include the telephone, stairs squeaking, and screeching like our eight month old son, though he speaks as well. I am in no way an expert on birds, but I love Greys dearly and look forward to learning much from this site. Thanks! -Faith

Koko is our first parrot and we are beginners in the parrots breeding. We are very happy that Sofia, Preston and Jane always help us with good advices. I don't know how we can cope without them. Hello Mark There is a lot to know about African Greys and it is an infinite process; there is always something new to be learnt. I have yet to come across one book (or internet site) which covers everything. It is best to ask a specific question and we will try to help you.
Regarding feeding, I give mine a good seed and bean mix plus pellets, banana chips, dried fruit and veg. They also have fresh vegetables, fruit, pasta, rice, chicken, scrambled egg.
Regarding talking, I don't think there is any difference in one sex over the other; I have a female who talks and a male who doesn't. It is all down to the individual bird and some are more talented than others. There is a wide variation in talking among African Greys, some start early at a few months, some much later, some not at all, although it is more unusual for a grey not to talk at all. Once they start, some develop a huge vocabulary, others are more limited.

hi my name is adele and i have been around parrots all my life as parents kept them, but my first was a congo female who was with me for years but had an underlying illness which she had treatment for the whole of the 9 years i had her and eventually it became to much for her and passed on she was roughly about 45 when she left us. i now have madness a male cag who came from a rather scruffy pet shop where he lived in a tiny cage on the floor with the rabbits and stinky the amazon who was a rescue bird we took in when his owners had enough of him. life is never dull with them two around. also share our home with a shih-tzu suzie and staffy rip. suzie loves the birds and rip would love to eat the birds lol. i found this site when i was looking for something else but glad i did as i have been reading the postings and im glad there is some were people can come with questions and problems etc. and get propper advice instead of the mumbo jumbo you get on some sites, well thats enough from me . bye for now adele.

Hi, my name is Laura and Cochi is my african grey, or....I am his person? I became a member of Cochi's flock when he was four weeks old. I realize that is pretty young, and not recommend for everyone; but I have had past experience with handfeeding and I had lots of help. I have been around different types of parrots, my mom has a military mccaw and my father has a conure. Cochi has been cuddled and loved since the day I brought him home. The second I get home from work IT'S PLAY TIME! He immediately comes to me and we spend alot of good quaility one on one time together, before his siblings get home from school. ( I say that to my non-bird friends and they think I am weird, oh well..) "They" say that grey's generally don't like to be cuddled such as; the cockatoos. I have found that not to be true. My friends cockatoo doesn't want to be cuddled, but Cochi at twelve weeks old will literally roll over on his back in my lap, to have his toes tickled. He has started a new game with me this week, he throws his toys off of the top of his cage and say uh-oh. So, I will go pick up his toys and place them back on top of his cage, where.....the game starts all over again. Uh-oh is his first word, which I am not complaining he is only twelve weeks old. I had already decided that even if he never utters one word the enjoyment that I receive, (and reduction of stress) just content to sit and rub the top of his head is more than enough for me. My mom always said, if your parrot does something to make you smile or laugh, deduct one dollar off of his purchase price and in no time he will have paid for himself! Thanks, Laura and Cochi
