Hi thanks for all your help with Koda. The "stepping up" training is going good. He lets me touch his toes with my fingers and takes food from my hand, but only if I eat the same thing right out of my hand at the same time. He still backs up and grunts if I move my hand toward him, but I am very pleased with his progress so far.
Since you guys have been so helpful, I have a new question. Do your greys ever freak out for no reason, and how do I get Koda to stop doing it? He was watching TV with me and we were both ripping up a piece of paper and he starts screaming and flapping and fell off the table and on to the floor. I didn't make a big fuss about it because I think he might be doing this for attention. But then he climbed up his cage and puffed up and wouldn't come out for the rest of the night. He wasn't hurt as far as I could tell. There was no blood and he only lost two of his little non-blood feathers. So I don't know what to do with this, he does it a lot. Sometimes he does it when he is in his cage and falls to the bottom of it. I took out the hard grate thing at the bottom and put newspapers because he used to bleed after he would fall. But it still always puts him in a bad mood and I can't do anything about it. Nothing happens to spook him, that I can see or hear that triggers these falls, so I don't know how to prevent them. I need some help, thanks you guys.

They can get spooked but because Koda is doing this for no reason, screaming and falling, I am wondering if he is getting muscle spasms, possibly due to low calcium. It sounds a bit too extreme to be usual grey nervousness.

Thanks Jane. I will get him one of those calcium tablet chew things. I don't have one for him because I thought it was included in his food cubes that I give him. They have grit in them so I guess I just assumed they had calcium too. I'll check the bag.
Thanks again.

Oh my gosh I just read that Grey's can't have milk! Koda always drinks my milk out of my cereal bowl and loves it. Why is it so bad for him. It is his favorite treat, he litterally charges the fridge when he sees someone grab the carton. I drink milk that is delivered to my house so it is fresh and it has no preservatives. I only let him have some like twice a week and he only drinks for less than a minute.
I would hate to take it away from him. Kitty Kat

You know those ones that are a big oval and clip to the side of the cage? Aren't those what birds need?

They can't digest the lactose (the natural sugar) in milk because they don't have the enzyme lactase to do so, and this will lead to digestive problems. They can have small amounts of yoghurt and hard cheese because the lactose is destroyed by bacterial activity.
Calcium can be obtained from other things as well such as almonds, green vegetables, peas, tofu.

my last grey did this it started of with a loud screetch and then tail feathers go wide and he would try to hold tight. or he would fall onto the floor and not be able to get back up for a couple of mins. its caused by spasams due to lack of calcium and the vet called it apoplexi, (dont know if i spelt it right but its promounced the way i spelt it) . she had to have a few jabs at the vets then we upped the calcium level gave her more sprouts and brocalie and greens and i got a supliment called calcivet from northernparrots.com which i gave a couple of drops in water every other week for a few days. The fits still continued until she passed over but she did live to a ripe old age. She came to me as a rescue bird and her last family had not given her any thing other than seeds and thats how it happened. now ive got madness , he has his seeds and juice in the morning, lunchtime has some fruit , tea time has something cooked and vedgies , and over night i put small bowl of seads and some carrots just in case he gets hungry, water is always fresh and in cage. once a fortnight i give them a couple of drops of calcivet in water . I also have a cuttle fish bone which i now leave in the cage all the time for them to distroy which has calcium in it, and they ahve a calcium beek block which they hate and dont bother with. I dont bother with vitamins as they eat well ballanced diet but if they ever off there food then i do add a drop to there water. oh gosh i do go on dont i . i will leave it there. all i wanted to say really was greys need calcium. byyyyeeeeeee
