This is my first post so I would first like to say hi. My question is If I could skip the cage all togeather. basicly cut out all the problems people face with removing their birds from the cages and just have my bird on and big play stand with toys food and swings. Or do they need a cage?

Unless the room you plan for your bird is completely safe, with no potential hazards in it, or you are going to be there all the time so that you can supervise your bird, then a large cage is advisable for at least a part of the time, when you won't be there. Even having a big playstand won't guarantee that a bird will stay on it and if it gets off it will get into any mischief it possibly can, so supervision is always important.

Just a thought on the cage vs no cage idea. My bird has a cage that he loves. I think its a security blanket to him.
As far as protection from other things. We live in a house that has lots of trees around. We had a close call with a large tree branch that came down on the house one day. If the branch had gone thru the window, the bird may have been spooked, or would be curious to investigate. And when we got home, the bird would have been gone! One never knows what could happen. What if an emergency occured while you were gone from home, would someone else know how to handle a free-roaming bird?
I think the cage is a good idea for both the bird's mental happiness and your's too.

a cage is a good thing when you are not around and a stand is good when you are there
