A baby Grey will have black eyes; both the iris and the pupil are black. The iris starts to lighten after a few months and gradually progresses through dark grey, pale grey, whitish, and finally very pale yellow. The age at which these stages occur can vary considerably from one individual to another but generally speaking they start to lighten around 6 months, are pale grey around a year and pale yellow by around two. Once the eyes have turned the pale yellow it is more difficult to determine the age of the bird. A closed leg band may have the year of birth on it.
