The day before last I looked over at Andi's cage to see her completelty immersed in the pellet bowl. Her feet were on the perch and the tail pointing straight up. I ask her if she needed more, and that's when my heart stopped as she didn't move a muscle. I looked at her to see if she was breathing. I leaned over to tickle her throught the bars, usually she would jump immediatly, but this time I was pressing into her pretty hard. My tongue was numb at the thought of the obvious; she was gone. Just before I got up to reach in through the door she popped her head up, and looked at me like I was the nut. She ran around the rest of the evening acting normal. Well she did it again last night, but this time I tapped my wife on the shoulder. I had forgotten to tell her about the previous incident so this was new to her. She looked at the cage and called for Andi then the blood left her face. I told her to go tickle ber butt, and just as before it took several seconds for her to awaken. Like the other day she resumed her normal romp around the cage ringing bells. I have a bird that falls asleep in her food bowl! I don't think it is narcolepsy (animal can have it) because it is only in the bowl, and that affliction causes sleep at random. She also loves to stick her head in the bell and talk, so it could just be a thing she has a thing about her head being covered, but I will call my vet to see if parrots are subject to the disease.

One of my greys does that too...only she likes to hide under a pillow. She lies there a long time with her butt in the air just like you said.

She did it again today, and I rushed for a camera. Not the best of shots but I think it's enough to get the idea. home.chilitech.net/~pstone/sleep.jpgShe is asleep, and it takes a good tickle to roust her.

Mine have never done anything quite so extreme but sometimes sit on their perches in "head down tail up" position. When I have Mitzi out for a cuddle she likes to have her head covered with my hand; maybe it is something to do with the light level.

It's funny to watch. Yesterday I needed to go the the store, so I loaded up the birds and when it came Andi's turn she ran into her cage and went straight to that bowl, stuck her head in it, but was not asleep. It's some kind of game to her but she falls asleep sometimes. It may just be a light thing. Could be that she isn't asleep and just can't see a finger coming to tickle her. Chalk another one up for individuality in Greys. ;D
