Just to catch everyone up--Peanut is doing fine. She's now 15 1/2 wks old. She gave me a bit of nerves as her weight dropped from 259 to 243 grms from Sunday till Thurs morning. Also, I didn't see much of anything in the way of shell husks, or waste on the floor or bottom of the cage so I thought she wasn't eating enough. A call to the breeder and she drove 180mi (one way), to make sure my baby was ok !!! Now that's what I call dedicated !!! Anyhow she said Peanut looked just fine to her and fed Peanut some weaning food. In the morning Peanuts weight jumped to 254. I now suspect that the weaning food has more "stick-to-it-iveness" to it or the birds just don't digest it as fast so the morning readings I was getting looked awful in comparison. It's either that or weaning food has lead sinkers in it !!!
She has definitely said "pretty bird" no less than 3 times and also says the 2 syllables for step up when you put your hand by her belly. She does step up with no problem and if she wants to go from one place to another-she'll gently grab your hand-pull it towards her--say the syllables of step up--get on your hand--and then lean in the direction she wants to go. (Usually to her cage). What a smarty pants !!!
It's just been the last two days that she seems to finally have gotten real comfy. She's far more active and vocal and she eats like a little piggy. Today I found her hanging upside down in her cage fighting with one of her toys.
As soon as she hears the microwave in the morning she barks!!! Yes the breeder had just gotten a Yorkie puppy and Peanut sounds just like it. (Once I thought it was my dog--even though my dog doesn't bark, it still took me a couple of minutes to realize it was Peanut).
Also today, the tiel took a notion to try to fly to the playgym where Peanut was. I am a little unsure of this because the breeder had tried to put her next to a senegal and Peanut lunged at it. The tiel is more than curious though as he is going out of his way to get closer to Peanut. (Also, he seems to have quieted down a lot--that's great--no more screamin !!!!)
When we eat, I still have breakfast with the tiel near me and Peanut is on her playstand on the other side of me or in her cage while we eat.
Gee I hope I haven't rattled on too long but hope that some of this post may help new birdie buyers.
It's hard to believe that this bird who has only been here for a week has become so loving and gentle and is so much a part of my life already.
