is there no concern for the bird biting on the CD material? this is not the first time i've heard of someone giving CD's as toys, i would worry that it would crack and the bird would choke or something but since i've now heard this at least twice, i'm assmuing it's safe??

Have you ever tried to break a CD? They are made of a very hard palomar, and when you do break they shatter throwing shards everywhere. I seriously doubt a Grey can break one! I would bet money that a Grey can't break it, and I am not a gambling man.

It's a good thing you are not a gambling man, Preston! Sterling can break a CD into pieces within minutes when the mood strikes him. We were giving him old ones for a while, but he either did that or would scrap off the silver stuff and get little pieces of it all over his face, so we stopped. Until I find out for sure this won't hurt him, CDs are off limits.
But yes, he loves them, and when I am putting a CD into the stereo, I have to hide it from him or he goes nuts. What was that parrot saying: If I see it, it's mine! Same way with remote controls and cell phones.

wow that is impressive that he can break a cd. Does he get upset when he gets all the silver stuff on his face? Once, when I wasn't watcing Manzi, he got into a piece of styrafoam. He was crunching through it until the static made little piece stick all over his head. He shook his head and they didn't fall off so he got scared and flew away.

adele, i'm cracking up visualizing a grey with white styrofoam all over his head and freaking out!!!! i'm not trying to be mean becuase i know its scary for them but it still sounds so comical. off topic - my cat stuck her head thru the handle of a paper bag, got it stuck, freaked and tried to run away from it but alas, the bag was attached to her so she would run faster. she was freaking out and running so fast i couldn't keep my eyes on her (actually i didn't even know what was going on until i finally cuaght her in the corner of the closet with the bag still attached!). you can't help but laugh even though your heart goes out to them.

No; he didn't seem to notice the silver stuff; it was so fine. We wiped his face off with a towel, which in itself was pretty entertaining. But yes I did develop a whole new respect for Sterlings beak strength when I saw him snap the first CD. He seems to have figured out the right angle to grab it and bend it until it just snaps. Little shards go shooting across the room. Not a good scenario, but funny anyways. Dr. Destructo is Sterling's nickname. The only toy he hasn't been able to destroy (other than heavy brass bells) is an old "artbox"; a plastic tackle box left over from my college days. He TRIES to take it apart but it is amazingly resilient and only shows dents so far. His latest thing is the cardboard middle from masking tape. He has chewed up a couple already. Busy beak!
