I was at this store the other day where they sell bird cages etc. And there was this guy who had his grey with him. He wasn't an employee or anything. His was saying how his grey would occasionally bite him, and to let his grey know he was the boss he would hit him on his beak. He actually demonstrated it. He was hitting hard too. I felt this was very harsh. Is this appropiate behaviour if a grey bites? I personally wouldn't do this to my grey, I would just put him on his perch or in his cage and walk away. I just wanted some opinions. Thanks!

Other than ignoring him, which I find to be the most effective, I also recommend a quick shake of the wrist if he's on your hand.
Make him think he's going to lose his balance, but don't let him fall. Hopefully you know the difference between a bite and a grab with the beak to keep from falling. A shaky hand will cause him to clamp down harder if he's trying to keep his balance.
DO NOT HIT YOUR BIRD. EVER.

Ya, when I saw that guy hit his beak like that, I was thinking I can't wait until that bird bites the s*** out of you. And that bird will one day. It made me very sad and angry.

Ya, the odd thing is I know the guy did like his grey. I could tell he wasn't some freak who abused his grey, but at the same time it's common sense not to hit an animal ANYWHERE! That's one reason why I'm glad this forum was created. It is very helpful and informative. Everything you would ever need to know about grey's!

Not necesarily common sense...just uneducated I think...my dad used to hit my first parakeet on the beak but none of us really knew any better, or about the blood supply thing. But thankfully we not do know better and are more understanding. I still feel bad for it though.
