Firstly, don't be nervous around your bird because she will pick up on this. She will take time to settle down in her new home so don't rush her. She may be a bit wary of you but talk to her as much as possible, tell her what you are doing and spend time with her. Don't make any sudden movements. What sort of place did you get her from and what else do you know about her?

Jane is right. Just take it slow. Talk and talk to her and let her know who you are and that you are her friend. Once she sees you all the time and knows you feed her and are her friend, etc she will come to the cage side and want to see you. If you open the cage does she hide or will she come to you? Put your finger under her breast above her feet and say "Step Up" and gently push against her so she will see she needs to step onto your finger. This may take time, but it will work over time. If she tries to bite -leave her alone and try again at another time. It may take several tries to get her to do this. And alot of patience on your part. It will happen once she knows you are safe. She will grow to love you in time. Just take it slow and don't make loud sounds or sudden moves. Good luck.

Before we brought our Grey home I read three books that I found to be most helpful....all by "Barrons"- African Grey Parrots, The African Grey Parrot Handbook and Guide To A well Behaved Parrot. There is just so much to know and learn, I actually went through the books with a highlighter and made some notes and questions that I had...
